Hellz yeah! I agree 100%. The PocketPC/WindowsMobile OS was pooped out my Microsoft so long ago that it is stale and petrified. Not only is the OS ancient by today’s standards, but the hardware requirements are as well. 128 MEGABYTES of storage is all you get out of the box. Hey, 128mb was awesome back in 2002, but, you can’t even buy a 128 mb storage device these days because that low of capacity is no longer acceptable.
I got hacked through ipower good and proper: there is a phoney site with my artwork, text and code that installs malware to unsuspecting people looking for me. My paid for website is http://tesselliott.com. If you Google my name, what comes up is NOT my site but http://www.tesselliott.com, and when you go there you get infected with all sorts of nasty stuff. I am still trying to find out if it messed up my Norton program, but Spyware Detector was able to get the bad stuff off my computer. I made a complaint to Google and other sites, but the criminal site still comes up on searches. I hate feeling helpless!
I just ran it and it seemed to work. Took a couple minutes to run but looks like it worked. Nice tip.
I’m about to leave igoogle as well. this “upgrade” is insane. I’m signed up for netvibes, but the problem with it is, I need a google calendar widget, a google notebook widget, and a google reader widget just like I have on my igoogle. The gmail widget works great on netvibes, but the others either aren’t avaliable, or aren’t letting me sign in to see my stuff. lame.
FINALLY! Someone who understands. I could not agree more. I think the only time you should see funny and Frank Caliendo in the same sentence is either, “Frank Caliendo is NOT funny” or, “I think it’s funny that people like Frank Caliendo”
I had the same problem with Grid. It thought it was a great idea to store its “flashback” feature on my C drive. This file was at minimum 1Gigglebit.
Blame microsoft however.. they are the ones who are initiating where the savegames are supposed to go with the new works with windows crap. They still shouldnt have migrated content like they did.
I hate having save games in my documents personally. Most of the time for older games I just modify the registry.
I remember a digg article saying google search will be hit this year because of MSN LIVE Search is really starting to help out the businesses by offering deals to buyers.
I tried http://www.nicholasoverstreet.com/mantis and got me a “The page cannot be found” PHP manages 404’s for the most part using wordpress. I hate it however.
steampowered.com’s forums has a windows and a linux server tutorials for both HL2 and HL1 Servers. Ive actually got to agree, they royally fucked up the directory structure in the new one. A simply addons folder, maps, sound, and the main directory was all you needed for HLGold.
Same with q3.
Looks like they agree with you over at wired. http://blog.wired.com/business/2009/02/why-googles-sof.html

They thought that VHS would ruin the theater experience and it actually boosted sales.
I dont know what the hell they are thinking sometimes. How did this hurt them in any way? Did hulu have inline advertisements on the site as well? I cant check from memory and dont want to use a proxy here at work (its blocked). That flash menu is nice. I had it on mine at one point too 🙂
I formatted my urls as simple title only. This rocks for finding posts too.. just type what you thought it was and the php will redirect to the closest thing.
It involves resoldiering. A very small object. What happens is the heat gets to the CPU, melting the “economical” soldier. Its retarded.. thats why the hot towel method works for a min.. it raises the temp enough to remelt the soldier.
I would recommend seeing what connection melted off.
You might try this:
I’ve used this site before and it’s kind of hit or miss. The page says updated Feb 2009 so you might have some luck with it.
LOL! OMG you are like a battered wife taking back her husband…”HTC/WinMo still loves me! They didn’t mean it! You don’t know them like I do!!!”
I bought Acer 9920G laptop 3.5 months ago and was generally quite pleased with it so far.
However, last week and switched it on and got this message upon load up:
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable.
PXE-M0F: Exiting Broadcom PXE ROM.
Operating System not found.
Well, I got a bit worries, googled this on my other computer, some other forums mentioned that it could be due to the Hard Disk failure.
Anyway, I took it back to the shop where I brought it from, the techy guy powered the laptop and it worked fine (???). He said it might be due to some loose wire inside that got back into place whilst I was carrying it to the shop.
I was quite relieved, took the laptop back home, powered it and got the same error message as before!!! I unplugged the whole thing again, carried it around the house and it was working again (just).
I then called Acer support line and spoke to the rudest man on Earth. I explained what happened and he said it was due to the loose hard drive. I asked if I could send the laptop back to them so someone could have a look at it and fix the loose hard drive. He said I would have to pay for this because the laptop was working at this current moment. I told him that the laptop was only 3.5 months old and still under warranty and I should not pay for fixing any manufacturing defects. He then said that it was not Acer’s fault because I did not buy the laptop from them but from the shop. When I said how it was shop’s fault that they receive faulty products from the manufacturer, he told me that he could not help me because “operating system going missing” is a software issue and nothing to do with Acer.
This is the most appalling customer service I have ever witnessed – it’s absolutely shocking!
I’m upgrading from an AT&T Tilt to the HTC Fuze this week and my wife already has the iPhone. I have to say with her iPhone, there are a couple issues that tend to bother me. One of which is removing apps from the device. You have to connect it to a computer, delete the apps via itunes and then re-sync the device. When trying out new apps, this is a bit annoyiong.
Second, is the having to close the application every time you want to open another. If I am playing a game or browsing the internet and I get a text message, I don’t want to close the game, find the messaging app, open it, read the message, close the messaging app and re-open the game/safari.
Good article, it just re-assures me that the Fuze was a good choice for my needs. Unfortunately I don’t have feedback on the Fuze experience yet, but WinMo isn’t bad if you clean up your install and configure it as suits your needs.
Its in true fashon for ryan to have a broken pc.
Wheres your rss feed? Do you have it through feedburner?
So I am currently moving files over to another drive to reformat. I dont really have to, but you know the whole side by side issues.. I assume if I start over fresh I wont have all those driver patches from the begining of vista that the side by side is full of (nvidia patching every month, and creatives endless patches).
We will only see. I bought a dedicated drive just for videogames, 1.5 TB means I can install all the games and not have to play swap the install.
I’ve had the same experience… Although with a system that *was* under warranty. Had a Seagate hard drive on which the firmware was bad (eventually Seagate resolved the issue, with no hassle).
I never was able to talk to a real human, the automated phone system mentioned above gave me a dead end *with* a good S/N under warranty, and all I ever got back from the “email” support were canned responses asking if the hard drive was plugged in.
I will never recommend Acer to a single client ever again. Ever.
Sounds good. Most server support is like that here at memorial..
Its like “its broke” “is it under warrenty?” “yep” “k, sending you a new one.”
Meh, just tried Windows 7 too and I fully agree with the article. Windows 7 is really something that I can dislike wholeheartedly.
I’m one of those that didn’t go from XP to vista, why? I didn’t see the need to and I also just recently went from 2000 to XP (1.5 years ago I think).
I must admit that coming from XP to Win7, and having had some experiences with Vista, I’d say that Win7 is a step in the wrong direction… sometimes it seems that progress isn’t always a step forward but quite the opposite
Oh, and the “snap to edges”. You can disable that in Controlpanel-> Ease of access-> make mouse easier to handle-> remove checkbox(prevent windows from being automatically…)
I’m not sure I got names of the things you need to click right but the steps are there.
Thanks for the iPhone apps tip. It wasn’t very clear that is how you remove the apps. Worked like a charm.
I’ll check out NATF’s ROM, I haven’t flashed the fuze with any ROMs other than the stock AT&T and the Test ROM that’s currently out as I’m always concerned I’ll damage the device beyond repair.
Thanks for the advice and perhaps I’ll flash my first cooked ROM shortly.
I’m not technically savy at all.. I bought the fuze yesturday and didn’t realize the GPS is an extra cost thorugh ATT. Is there any way around paying for GPS?
thanks, it was easy to follo, wbut a little problem trying to find the usb-fdd image file but finally it was rewarding
again thanks a lot
I haven’t played it that far yet, but I agree they did a great job on the game. Visually, it’s awesome. The voice acting is great, even though it’s a little hard to hear sometimes (could just be my loud ass gaming rig). Over all excellent game. I hope they introduce a multiplayer option for the PC in the future.
If you think some of those are bad you should try to ‘clean’ a brand new Sony Vaio. I bet they can hold a candle, or some other light producing device, to those Acer and Lenovo machines.
I couldn’t agree more! I was struggling to find a BDE (Borland Database Engine) installer at work today, but that (and a lot of other Borland software) has been bought/sold/traded for livestock so many times that’s been lost to the bit bucket. Luckily we still had the old stuff from 1999 on one of our shared drives.
Hit me up if you need a 16-bit version of Netscape from 1994 🙂
Next week, I’m getting a new phone and, of course, I’ve narrowed it down to the iPhone and the Fuze.
Right now, I am leaning considerably towards the Fuze. I like the look of it, I like the hardware keyboard, and so far I’ve heard no major objections to the device. However, having played around with my boyfriend’s iPhone and read through some concerns regarding the Fuze, I do have some potential issues.
I’m fifteen so, of course, I’ve got limited access to tweaking. I could figure some of it out, I’m sure, but for the most part, I’d have no idea what I’m doing.
With the risk of sounding like a complete idiot – what’s ROM, and what does it do for the phone?
I am also a bit worried about the internet capabilities. Phones that take five minutes to load a page, have no HTML, and then force you to search for another fifteen minutes to find what you want because the text is all bunched up in one section make me absolutely crazy. I haven’t the patience for it. How do the webpages on the Fuze compare to that of the iPhone? I’ve found the iPhone’s Safari browser to be very useable.
The final concern of mine regards the music player. I looked at a Youtube tutorial, and it said that you had to browse your music by album – is this true? I know it has 32G of expendable memory, but I’m sure that gets used up rather quickly by messaging, internet, and apps. How much music, on average, can one fit onto it?
Thanks so much!
Dude, many thanks indeed. I’m goin’ to build a new system w/o a CD-ROM, just an HDD, and the USB Stick.
I would recommend this to a friend, or someone who wants to build a firewall system.
I tried extracting the .gz file that i downloaded from the IE web browser, didn’t work, used FF 3.0.11, and it extracted w/ no problems 🙂 YAY!
I spent some time today configuring NTPSync on my Untangle (LINUX)Server only to find that the issue was with the Domain controller which is all sorted now thanks to you
Once again much appreciated Nick
Acer just released all temporary employees and permanent employees up to 30 people. Place is empty, and they kept all indian techs and hired more indian techs overseas. This occured the third week of July.
I like wififofum. Yea, and if only we could harness that same bandwidth to give us a better more reliable 3g signal out here 🙂
I’m still on NOD32 with Vista SP2 and Win 7 RC and haven’t had any problems. I’ll follow up if that changes.
DHL steps on their packages. I went out to meet one last christmas and he was going through his packages looking for mine, stepping on boxes in the back. I asked why there were no shelves and he told me it was a new truck and they didnt install them yet….wow.
LOL. Guess that’s partly why DHL Express closed up shop in the USA.
There have been several times I’ve had to go to the UPS Springfield location off of S Dirksen parkway because I knew there would be no way I’d get my package by the time I wanted it.
Odd shapes usually get the run around at the sorting facility. Next time have the person you buy from actually use a box or an envalope. Envalopes go through a seperate sorter.
I’ve been trying all thiese steps but I got a message that reads “no cdrom found”. I’ll try tomorrow disconecting the FDD and CDROM, I’ll only leave the USB drive,(Dell Dimension c521, only Sata Ports )
I’m want to install ipcop in a new computer that has 4 GB on RAM Because that current one, only has 2 GB, my network is around 250 computers and for any reason the memory and cache got 97 % of use and then web proxy stop and internet goes down
Any other Idea ?
thank you very much
Hugo Perales ( firstname.lastname@example.org )
Yep…on 437. I did the Vista -> Win 7 RTM upgrade with it installed on my gaming PC and no issues so far.
Unfortunatly publishers dont pay attention to pc gamers that much in the first place. The only thing we potentially have to look forward to is getting a fast enough connection to stream games over a browser and then become system independant. They are trying again (3 companies) but as usual, america has slow internets.
Yeah, AntiVir has been my choice of weapon for the last few years. The ad that pops us is a little annoying, but it gets the job done. Just don’t forget to run anti-malware too. I’ve run Avira and its missed bad malware infections completely.
You do realize that the requirements for Virtual PC clearly state what operating systems are compatible with it right?
I just went to
it seems like it does work for home premium.
You just need to get a newer version
For virtual pc 2007, maybe you should try the backward comb shortcut assignment. That might fix the problem.
there is a new version of virtual pc for win 7. The one i posted links says awaiting moderation. That one should be win 7 home premium compatible.
lol exactly what I was trying to say. They clearly state that it does work with certain OS’s.
Just because something works on Windows Vista does not mean has to work on Windows 7. They are two different operating systems.
not by much. 7 is based off of the vista kernel like xp was based off the 2k kernel. Also you can use vista drivers in window 7.
nope, its all set on my side..forget what I said.
It takes them a while to kick in after creating an account. I didn’t see them on Nodnarb.Net at first. Now you need to convince Ryan to sign up 🙂
I would have went but work consumes me, and the ammount of rain it would have had to been a sure thing.
Next season I will be free every weekend. I will definatly ride with you guys. Hell I might even upgrade to a CBR over the winter.
Sounds like a great time. LOL @ the tickets. Lucky you were able to get them in time!
We’re going in a few weeks and are really looking forward to it. It’s been nine years for me and about thirteen for June.
I’d highly recommend Wicked. I think it’s supposed to be at the Fox next summer. We saw it in San Francisco last week. I’d put it up there right along with Phantom and Le Mes as one of the greats.
Yes, it has it’s little quarks and annoyances, but there is no reason to avoid it. It is a great, fantastic, VERY stable OS. Anyone who claims otherwise probably doesn’t understand computers and is scared of change.
Some time ago i was given a new operating system from microsoft to install. It was in a fancy box and i was very enthusiastic as the last operating system was so good, windows xp. I had heard it had native dvd burning, and installed faster. First it complained that my partitions were too small, but soon after, i was quickly on the way to installing a shiny new operating system. It seemed to install very quickly. Then i clicked the start button … as first i thought it was a joke, then i thought i had got a virus, then i realised, microsoft had completely given up. What i installed was the most tragic sorry piece of shite i’d ever come across. What was this total catastrophe ? Well, needless to say, i never adopted it and only used it for compatibilty testing our software releases. Several years later, a more sober microsoft made a successor available to much fanfair. Obviously they would have done a lot to fix what was wrong with that debacle called vista. I cautiously installed the new operating system, known as windows 7. New desktop background. Share limit up to 20 from 10, nice. That was it. Everything else was the same old shite. Sluggish, multitudes of button clicking to find the unfindable. What was the point ? Why didnt they just stay in bed and not waste people’s time ? Total catastrophe #2. Whoever set the XP service lifespan to 2018 has known for a long time what we just discovered, and given a three year release schedule, windows 8,9 and 10 will be equally tragic …
You are totally right man, I thought this would make a sweet christmas gift for myself. Then after the research I found that it was a hunk of shit. Who says being skeptical is a bad thing?
With Ubuntu gaining popularity and Apple gaining market share, MS can ill afford to release yet another mediocre operating system.
‘It’s not their job to make sure their computer is secure’
– Yes it is, but MS have no idea how to achieve this with a fundamentally insecure OS, hence these stupid features.
Never has there been a better time to switch operating systems – Linux is no longer only suitable for geeks, my Nan now uses it quite happily.
Dude, you nailed it…I can hardly watch the World Series. Her voice grates like nothing I’ve ever heard.
Her series will last 2 days.
seriously, neither vista nor 7 are step in right direction, XP was fine because it was light and yet very stable and usable for both work and entertainment, vista and 7 being built on top of .NET bloatware code made them stupid – literarly stupid and bloated, they can be 2x secure than XP but that does not excuse them from being resource hog and totaly stupid to use
i personaly hate in both vista and 7 that they REQUIRE dual core processors and atleast 2 GB of RAM so user can normaly use those piece of crap OS-es with their full “features”
i tried to run 7 on single core 2.8 Ghz intel with 1 GB of RAM and all i got was choking whenever i (JUST !) watched a movie
seeing DWM eats 10-20% CPU, movie player ~60% and rest of 42 proccesses the rest, so it was overall at 100% for single movie watching… just terrible
She is an ugly annoying racist with no talent.Ghetto trash talk is getting boring and she has to have talent to go above the stereotype.
Having read the above I have to agree that if Acer gave me a laptop, I would not even use it as a door stop. It’s off being repaired again and I’m sure they will do the usual reinstall, one size fits all repair fix. Cannot get anyone on the phone, leave messages and no one gets back to you. Can’t wait to get it back (again) so I can go back to the shop I bought it from, kick up a fuss and sit outside the door until I get a refund (due to unfit for purpose) or a new anything but Acer lap top.
Security software is bad. Norton being the worst. I’ve seen unactivated Norton Trials, where there’s no Norton tray icons or anything, more than double boot time. And what’s with security software and browser toolbars? Sure scan websites if you want, but why do I need a half inch of vertical space wasted on a Norton Toolbar?
WildTangent games. Normally takes up about a gig of space, these things are like crappy versions of flash games.
Thing is most users can’t be bothered. They’ll happily use Internet Explorer with half the space wasted by toolbars, they’ll keep thinking they have virus protections from their expired norton trial (which is still bogging down the PC) even though Norton itself, and Security center are announcing that the system is not protected.
At the new “Microsoft Stores” Microsoft is flipping OEMs the bird by giving a fairly clean install. Windows, Windows Live suite (Movie maker, mail client, MSN… not utterly useless stuff), and I think MSE, which is fairly lightweight, and won’t expire.
yes i hear it from many pepole they have a lot of problems beginning with the desktop ending with anythings.i use xp sp3 even the dvd from window 7 is on my desk i do not use this piece of shit, sorry to say that.do not waste any money for this fake!!
I have been a MicroShit XP user since it’s release. Not one that will venture into another MS waste of time before their product has been tested and exposed… Meanwhile, friends and lovers all switched first to Vista and recently to 7. I get on their computers and I wonder how in the world those ass holes are ever so successful in managing to make their piece of shit Windows user interface more and more stupid with every release.
All I can tell you is this – from shitty minds comes shitty products. Aside from the shit user interfaces both miserable releases are resource hogs and offer nothing and I mean nothing that has not been in existence for the past ten years (or at least your could not get from other vendors).
Those clowns managed to monopolize the market, drive everybody else out of business for the sole purpose of stifling the industry into a poor performance shit product full of superfluous code (to make it virtually impossible to reverse engineer) thereby guaranteeing their existence forever.
Soon to switch to a MAC…
agreed, seen the commercial so i was skeptical, found out you need a stupid case for device to be charged, what a crock of shit, otherwise you have to use a cord. Wasn’t the point of this product not to use a cord? I don’t know if its just me, but this idea just seems plain retarded.
Microsoft backup has always been half assed. I was hoping for more. Here is the thing, the server has 8 cores of 45nm Intel fury and is under almost no load. None of the core maxes during the backup. So even though it compresses, it is not utilizing the hardware available. It is just shit, plain and simple.
I am using Avira now per your recommendation here. I keep telling it to ignore this specific file I have, but it forgets after every boot… Unless this file gets regenerated on every boot.
But it did find ONE trojan on my machine after being without antivirus for 5 months. I was hoping for 666 again.
In case of “Access Denied” you have to enter the NTFS ACL of the file and provide modify rights to the Administrators – afterwards rename succeeds.
Thank you, this is exactly what I am thinking. Wireless charging is cool and has been out for a long time, I remember having an electric toothbrush that wirelessly charges. But spending $140 on a pretty much a flat dock is pointless, I’d rather buy an iHome speaker system.
I have a Dell Dimension 8400 on the bench with a Stop 0x000007E error – as this particular Dell’s BIOS defaults to an AHCI disk config, the infection of the iastor.sys file prevents the system from loading windows (safemode included) changing to ATA mode doesn’t help (without a repair install at least).
Avira found (but can’t clean) the iastor.sys infection for me as well.
Thought to leave this note for others searching for this issue.
Thanks for the help Nick.
First, I’m not entirely computer illiterate but when it comes to this type of issue, I’m usually at a loss. Here’s what I’ve done to date and I still can’t get rid of the damned keyboard.
1. I’ve disabled the Tablet PC Components
2. In the Ease of Access folder under the “Use the Computer Without a Mouse or Keyboard”, I uncheck the “Use the On-Screen Keyboard” option but when I then exit the screen and go back, the box is checked again.
3. I’d like to use the “Utilman” file you’ve made available but as AG has come across above, I don’t have permission to change current file properties and I’m again at a loss with the “NTSF ACL”.
Any other advice you’d be able to provide would be a great help in dealing with Microsoft’s bullshit.
Thanks for the quick response Nick. Now that I’ve changed permissions, etc, I’ve renamed the original Utilman file to Utilman.exe.old and have downloaded your file. I’ve saved it to my system32 folder and ran the file successfully but the fucking keyboard still shows up whenever I load my user account. Any other thoughts?
I refuse to get a smaller laptop. 18 inches is heavy but worth the lug!
I didn’t know Personas was getting built into 3.6. It’s kind of neat, but, since I’ve had it, it seems like they update it all the time. I wonder if FF 3.6 will need to be updated just as often, just for Personas.
Sorry for this late post but…. if you know what you’re doing you can remove that stupid “Ease of Access” button (I’m using Vista SP2) download ResHack (google it) find windows\system32\authui.dll open with ResHack go to UIFILE then 11000 and remove this and save (you may get a black screen if you did it wrong also safe mode login screen wont show up):
formatting won’t work so…
if id = “atom(Accessibility)”
width = “38rp”
height = “28rp”
content = “resbmp(11118,2,-1,0,0,0,1)”
borderthickness = “rect(4rp, 2rp, 4rp, 2rp)”
background = “resbmp(11123,7,-1,0,0,1,1)”
if keyfocused = “true”
borderthickness = “rect(4rp, 2rp, 4rp, 2rp)”
background = “resbmp(11119,7,-1,0,0,1,1)”
if mousefocused = “true”
borderthickness = “rect(4rp, 2rp, 4rp, 2rp)”
background = “resbmp(11120,7,-1,0,0,1,1)”
if keyfocused = “true” mousefocused = “true” pressed = “false”
borderthickness = “rect(4rp, 2rp, 4rp, 2rp)”
background = “resbmp(11121,7,-1,0,0,1,1)”
if pressed = “true”
borderthickness = “rect(4rp, 2rp, 4rp, 2rp)”

Can you send me the authui from Win7 so I can take a quick peak at it and see what they changed?
Either I typed my e-mail wrong or the e-mail was deleted because of the .dll. Also I forgot to ask you to also send WINDOWS\System32\en-US\authui.dll.mui? (both in a zip or 7z)
Just to give you all a bit of hope. I rang every day and sent emails every day for about two months. As they could not give me a date for the return of my faulty lap top I insisted on a refund under the 1979 sales of goods act,(not fit for purpose and faulty). Guess what< I got the refund, twice!!!!! So guess who's ringing me twice a day looking for me to refund their money? Do you think I should give it back???? Not talking their calls………just letting them know what its like when the shoe is on the the other foot. Dont give up, get a contact name andkeep sending emails etc, become a right pain in the arse, it's the only way.
I am really pissed about this too. I hope they fix this soon because I like the personas but I want to keep my Noia 2 Extreme theme.
I’m also holding off on updating Firefox because of this. However, it seems you can still get the non-default theme and persona to mesh if you use an older version of the Persona addon in Firefox 3.6.
Are you using Windows? You can save one whole row of space by moving your Bookmarks Toolbar Items up to the Menu row.
I also recommend the Smart Bookmarks Bar addon to shrink those Bookmarks to just their favicons (I use Favicon Picker to individualize the non-folder favicons) while still being able to see their names on mouseover. Saves a ton of space for other stuff.
Another addon I appreciate is Menu Editor to consolidate my menus to just the Bookmarks Menu and the Tools Menu (into which all the options I actually use have been moved from the other menus). Another space-saver (if you’re using Windows, of course).
Even if you’re not on Windows, I found that the Toolbar Buttons addon provides button versions of the Menus which you can use in place of the entire Menu bar.
Oooh! And the experimental Hide Caption addon let’s me get rid of the entire Title bar! You can have the title of the window you’re in display in the Status Bar (if you have one).
It also provides an alternative button for the Min/Max/Close, but I prefer to use the ones in the Toolbar Buttons addon because they take up less vertical space.
So, compared to the your 5 rows (including Title Bar), I have only 3 rows (4 if you count the thin Status Bar). I also have a vertical column for more buttons thanks to All-In-One Sidebar.
Yeah, I understand. We like things in our own ways. Thank you for responding.
Hope Mozilla will make Personas and Themes compatible again. Until then, I’ll stick with the old Firefox until I’m forced to hack around in 3.6.
Just to show off, here’s a link to what my browser currently looks like:

Seriously this is what kept me from using firefox as my primary browser back when everyone loved it.. I dont want all that clutter.. 2 bars is almost too much for me. Even in IE I have all the buttons small setting and no words except for the title.
Hell, if I could I would turn off this stupid search area I would be a happy man.. despite IE’s many flaws.
I can not right click on my laptop…Is it associated with this ease of access thing that I can not get rid of? I went into it wondering what it was and now I can not use my right click button.
I thought about going to UPS Saturday but guess what?! Not open!!! How very considerate!!! Awesome place. Awesome!
I cannot believe that Larry David has her on Curb your Enthusiasm. She friggin ruins it with her ghetto ebonic speak. All her attempts at jokes revolve around race….
Thankyou. I have been fighting with 2008 for a few weeks, and i just couldnt figure out what i was doing wrong. We’ve got new hardware, new software, new cables, new pants, new everything. But its all slower and more difficult than 2003.
I’ve seen complaints that the new commandline version isnt really pure commandline. Yes that sucks. And some of us want the GUI, but this sucks too – i permanently live inbetween: typing commandline code into GUIs .
Microsoft: Just what are you playing at. 2008 is going to tickoff everyone.
Operating Systems that annoy you….
Clearly, they copied that “x hours ago” from Facebook.
I just used ResHacker to open authui.dll, searched for “accessibility” and found this:
. I changed the layout position to “none” and the button disappeared.
wanda sykes is terrible!!! and yes she has the most annoying voice ever!! i hate it when i see her on tv,. the only reason she will get ratings is because she is on saturday night at a good time when nothing else is on,. hopefully she wont be on tv much longer cause i cannot stand her,. when i see her on tv i go” oh god ,not her again”.. i hate her so much i made the effort to google search “wanda sykes sucks” lol, lol, lol!!!
Hi again. Well, due to a struggle trying to get YouTube to work again, I ended up updating to Firefox 3.6. 🙁
I tried the hack where I change the max version on the Personas 1.4 add-on xpi and install. It did work (Compact Menu theme works with Personas), but it insisted on trying to update to the latest Personas add-on version (1.5.2?). Well, I fixed that problem by going back into the xpi and changing the version from “1.4” to “1.7”. Re-install and… Voila! No more update notifications! 😀
Okay, just a quick note.
Every time I change my persona to something else, my browser asks me to restart. Don’t restart. Instead, go to Themes and reselect your favorite theme (Personas tries to change it to the Default) and the restart message goes away.
Nick – sorry to hear about the problems you have experienced. Would you email me or call me with your contact information and I’ll be happy to assist.
Awesome story! Another great example of how customers and companies are using the Internet to connect in ways that never would have taken tons of phone calls and endless frustration in the past.
she’s an idiot. thought she was ok until i heard her call everyone that disagreed with President Obama a racist. BTW I support Obama but do not support hasty generalzations!
Had that come up on mine too. Bold of them to slap Oracle in the face like that, but I agree completely necessary.
Close explorer altogether, it will work if you don’t have anything showing the files you are using open. (at least for me – same error and closing explorer fixed it)
Great FAQ, and straight to the point, worked like a champ! Our company was buying these small supermicro 1U rack boxes with no cdrom, so I always opened up the case hooked up a cdrom cable and installed that way, with the bootable USB, system booted right up, recognized the USB ky drive, and loaded the Ipcop, without a hitch. Only cleanup I did after that was run the updates from my MAC, and also install the OpenVPN plugin software.
i can’t stand her either..didn’t really have a problem with her till the new commercials about calling things gay when you really mean they are stupid..how GAY!!!not wishing harm on the silly bitch, just wish i could watch a show on t.v. without her bull-dike looking ass interupting with some hollow attempt for more attention..arrgghh how annoying…i’m not being sexist, racist,or a homophobe…just can’t stand this worthless hack…PLEASE, NETWORK T.V. STATIONS TAKE NOTICE AND FORCE THIS HORRIBLE “GAY” FARCE INTO AN EARLY RETIREMENT…
LOL mockup…Sam’s Club is printing the receipts on both sides of the paper now, so maybe they’ll roll it into Wal-Mart before too long.
Wal-Mart also could get rid of the “# items sold” line. Unless the company assumes its customers don’t know how to count.
Walmart isn’t green, they’re efficient. The reason why they like less packaging — less space used per item = more items shipped for same money. More efficient routes = less gas so spend less money for shipping. They’re masters at saving pennies to make dollars…after all they didn’t start importing from China to give the impoverished masses of the third world jobs but to pay for products made at $.28 / hour wages.
Receipts may be upcoming, but only if they truly save money. Any green ancillary benefits are gravy for the marketing department.
But I don’t necessarily see that as a bad thing. Imagine how much pollution and waste we would all save if we simply used less instead of consuming, consuming, consuming. Our love for “disposable,” “new,” and “roomy” products probably does more to kill the planet than anything else.
Total decieving rip-off. I bought the 1XA for my touch and I now have to buy a seperate case to fit it. On the picture on the front of the package there is a IPod touch in it. What the hell? Now I have to spend another $30.00 to make this work. Wow, I find it amazing how companies can downright LIE and practice false advertising and it’s perfectly o.k. If you or I would do this, We’d be prosecuted. I’m really angry and am begging everyone to PLEASE ban this product.
Nick, I am having the same problems you mentioned. I signed up for the 10 Mbs internet, the DVR with HD and I am still waiting for a DVR. We were spoiled because we had Direct TV for about 8 years and always had a DVR. We switched because we were getting tired of losing TV signal every time it stormed and rained hard, but so far now, we have had 2 major outages with New Wave, the internet speeds changes constantly and the TV signal seems to drop out for no apparent reason also. We are now almost 2 months without a DVR and getting ticked. These guys need to do better.
What a crap-ass awful design!
I wish more laptop/netbook makers would get it together with the two finger scrolling. Every PC implementation I’ve seen of it, so far, has been pretty awful. Touch pads in general are still way too small. I still use the IBM/Lenovo eraser head on my work laptop.
hi nick, did you encrypt the whole system with plausible deniability? i was considering whether to do that to my netbook which has a quick boot function. any suggestions?
thanks for the response, appreciate it. agreed truecrypt is really an outstanding product. alrite, gonna do the same to mine this weekend 😉
No, we are in the Anna area. Still waiting for an HD DVR. Talked to someone at Taylorsville in CS, she said it should be installed Tuesday or this week, but nothing yet. They were to send one of the new ones down this way. I was at the local office on Wednesday, the girl said she didn’t have a work order showing. The installer was there also, heading out to install HD units. Probably mine.
Yup, and I moved to android, which I thought I would never do. I am so glad I did. Pressing OK once to install an app without an issue is amazing.
I do still miss my close button.
The working, reliable alarm clock absolutely amazed me when I went from Windows Mobile to my iPhone.
Thank god someone agrees with me, I got the DV6T a week ago and it was as you said, unusable. After being on the phone with HP Tech Support I found out that it’s just a shitty piece of hardware and that they don’t even have a replacement one with normal buttons.
As it is, after a long battle with customer support trying to find out if any of their models have a different touchpad (there are maybe three, all of them being terribly underpowered) I returned it yesterday and purchased a Dell.
Do they not realize how bad it is that they put it on 90% of their models?
microsoft has a tradition of entering into new markets at a very later stage and simply copy technologies from other major players.
this is exactly what they did in 1980s during the initial stages of PC era,
and in 1990s during the evolution of internet and now in the mobile era.
What Mickey says in 21 & 22 might be fine if it was true. But instead of
button id=”atom(Accessibility)” tooltip=”true” layoutpos=”none”/
button id=”atom(Accessibility)” tooltip=”true” layoutpos=”left”/
and however I change “left” to “none”it reverts to “none” .every time.
Glad I found this. Great advice. I recently got bitch slapped by a Java malware exploit on IE that cost me a day of work. Wish I had read this beforehand.
Java has had a rough go *just recently* in this regard, but over its lifetime, has a better security track record than many other technologies. Saying “Remove Java from your computer completely” is a bit over-the-top.
i ordered a new HP DM4 last month..specs were great, had high hopes for the laptop
and then i experienced the touchpad, that shit is the worst design ever! i tried so hard to get used to it and modify the settings…its just too annoying
i had to return it, turns out all of the new HP consumer laptops have this shitty design…i cant believe the designers at HP let this bullshit make it to production..im so disappointed with HP
Now wait a minute here. This guy on this rant isn’t alone here. There are OTHER customers on this service suffering from the same crappy service from this company. How about ACTUALLY FIXING your problems with customer service and the lack of skill to properly run your network? That might be nice in contrast to picking off the one guy with the guts to go public (and make it high in Google search rankings for Newwave Communications). This guy had the knowledge (and skill) to figure out your problems for you. So, this guy is happy now. But look what it took for him to get what you advertise. This makes me laugh but it also makes my skin crawl. So, should the rest of us now contact Mike Burns, THE General Manager at 573-703-5981. Hmmmm… where’s my phone?
Oh, and by the way, your website has been offline for three days. Right at the time my bill is due. I ORDERED an even additional add-on for HD channels which I can’t figure out the total price because I can’t get on the website.
Yeah I thought she was alright until recently when she got her show. She is among that stupid group of people who are on the “just because he’s black, you disagree” bandwagon. He’s not black; he’s biracial like me. if he doesn’t acknowledge that he’s biracial than he’s an idiot.
I can’t get this to totally work on my Windows 7 Home Premium x64 system:
I wont go into the program but the dimmed screen that you mentioned wont appear either. It works but not totally like it does in the x86 systems.
Thanks, great tut.
EDIT: Found out what I had done wrong. You need to rename the file from utilman to Utilman(with the first letter capitalized. Works fantastic now!
Warning Warning Warning!
I performed this on my Nexus One and lost all the notes fields That I had added to my phone by hand. This seems to be a one way sync, meaning that information from Gmail is loaded onto your phone without regards for these fields. Use caution, backup or export your phone contacts before trying this.!!! wsorich
I had to buy a 7 equipped laptop 2 months ago, because my XP one died 🙁
With all the bagging of Vista, I had expected that they had developed 7 off the back of XP. But no, it is shit – your gripe here is just one of many things I absolutely hate about my new computer. All of them Windows based. And no drivers are available to roll the machine back to XP – arrrgh!
Yep, it’s shit. Looks shit, multi window popping garbage. And constantly resizes video window when watching full screen and etc etc etc.
I’ve been trying to install WMP10 since I had Win7 thrust upon me rudely from behind. Why can’t we install old software versions on a new operating system – what’s the big fucking deal Microsoft? What a bunch of twats.
i’m in a real big trouble please help me.
I encrypted my netbook with secure disk from securstar(dot)com .NOW the OS didn’t load so i had to install my win7 on a different partition.I installed securedisk again but it won’t read the encrypted partition.I have the password but no way to acess the partition please help.
Hi I got an HP dv6t Laptop today and i even did not like the touchpad. the buttons are so hard I had an old dell inspiron 6400 and the touchpad rocked. the buttons are so smooth and there was side scrolling also..The over all laptop seems ok..but the touchpad sucks..
Mine is about to go back, I tried to give it a chance, but the new touch pad is awful. Can’t use if for anything.
I have been having the same problem with the touchpad. There is a fix on the HP website:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02445227&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=4221638. I have downloaded and installed the new driver and, so far, it seems like a big improvement.
This worked for me as well but I would like the birthdays to be visible on the month view rather than having to view the day to see them. My tasks show as blue dots, birthdays should be similar. Is there a setting I missed?
Thank you for your post I have tried several time but my brithday that i have on my gmail contact DON’T appear in my nexus one….it’s super strange because all look fine…
someone has the same problem here?
Luca, I had the same problem – then I followed these instructions and made it work:
Basically, it’s about removing and then readding the function in your phone’s calendar. I hope it’ll work for you too.
Still, it seems to me the syncing is not fully developed. First, for some reason I have to add the birthdays via the web interface – when I add the birthdays on my phone’s calendar (HTC Legend), the are not synced to my google contacts (when everything else is). Second, I can’t just add new birthdays and see them in my phone’s calendar. I then need to do the back-and-forth operation (removing and readding) over again, and then the new birthdays appear in my calendar. I hope Google will fix this soon, so I don’t have to rely on my brain to remember birthdays 🙂
I too have had noting but problems since New Wave took. I used to have both their cable tv and internet service but ending up dropping the tv due to it constantly going out and there unwillingness to fix it. I still use their internet service but i have had the same issue for over 2 years and so far i am no closer to getting it fixed than i was 2 years ago. My service is either so slow you can’t use it or it is down. The last 2 time they actually came out they changed the modem assuring me that would fix it and as i tried to explain to them that is not the problem. If they show up and the service is actually working they just say, “well it is working now so we can’t help you now” , now that is some great service. They are supposed to be here some time tomorrow but as usual they couldn’t give me a time frame. The only reason i still use them is that where i live they are the only provider but i was told that is no longer the case so i will investigate it more this week. If there is another option i know alot of people that will be dropping them very quickly.
Hey Nick, I also have a green “PC Sync” calendar tab in my Calendar on my phone. What is this? I don’t have any visible events even when I have this calendar checked. Thanks for you time.
Oh god. I got the dv6t yesterday. I never such a hard time setting up a damn laptop. The touch pad is ridiculous. It is the worst one I have used. I wanted to throw the laptop against the wall by the time I was done. I was going to buy another laptop for work. But now I am going to return the one I have and get a Dell. HP you are going to loose a shit load of business if you don’t fix this problem.
Wow, I’ve been looking for this functionality for years (even before Android came along) and didn’t know it could do this until now. Thanks SOOO much!!
Saw 3D might be a nice catharsis, Chester gets put in a trap, and judging from the series track record, probably dies.
This is so true this is the worse gadget i ever came across, & I’m a gadget guy. It sucks, they promised a system for the Blackberry still waiting after 2 year, my phone died for gods sakes. I guess i will have to wait another six for the droidx,
1. install theme and persona
2. select persona, restart
3. select theme, restart
4. goto about:config
set lightweightThemes.isThemeSelected to true, restart
6. wait 4 fkin mozzi teams repair these superior extensions to right way
tested on 4.0b8/linux
My persona setup (see previous comments) has gone belly-up 🙁
My Classic Compact theme background stays gray.
Even if I allow a restart and go to “Default Theme”, I get a solid neon color for the background (which definitely does NOT look like the persona I chose).
Uninstalling the modified Persona xpi makes no difference, and the background either stays gray, or I get the neon color (different neon color per persona, apparently) again.
I should probably try out the setup again on a new profile (I have about 40 other add-ons), but will do so when I eventually feel motivated.
« TrueCrypt is a great product, and I am still shocked it’s free »
You can’t trust an encryption software if it’s not open source. And if it’s open source, then people will expect it’s free.
there lots of reasons why windows phone 7 will fail and one more reason and its a big one for me and maybe not for everyone but the built in Zune player will not support the streaming of mms,asx or asf files and that is what i primarily use a smartphone for so i will just hang on to my old windows mobile 6.1 lg incite phone for that very reaon
Made a new profile and my setup is now working again. Don’t know what happened in my previous one, but there seems to be no conflicts with other add-ons that I had in my old profile.
Can’t wait for Firefox 4 to come out with Panorama (*drool*).
I have had the unfortunate pleasure of having to deal with newwave in Mayfield KY. Hands down they are the worst service provider i have ever had. i had so many problems with their television service and boxes that i had to drop them and get satellite tv for which i have had nothing but stellar service and reliability. you would think the issue of going out in storms would be that of the satellite provider but no it was NewWave that would go out in storms.
I was having major issues with the internet service of NewWave with it being totally unusable during “peak” hours. So New Wave decided to expand their pipe for more bandwidth but instead of letting folks have the service they pay for NewWave got greedy and upped their package to 15mb and the pipe was soon full again. While they have given refunds and sent out techs to do the exact same thing the previous 10 techs did the service is still crap. As of this writing my current speed maxes at at 1.78 mb and that is not even stable.
When you try to write the president per the promise thing he tosses up on the web page it is intercepted by lower managers who simply repeat the same processes that had been going on for months. Does the President actually ever see these complaints? i doubt it. I would drop NewWave internet in a heartbeat if we had any other choice but the cable monopoly rules here also.
Simply put if you can avoid New Wave Communications take a wide berth and don’t look back as you can expect nothing but headaches or “upgrades” from 10mb to 15mb when they can not even get you more than 2mb.
Couldn’t agree more.I purchased a DV7-4004tx to replace my DV6-2114tx.I hated the touch pad so much I swapped it’s 8gb of mem for my 4gb and off loaded it.
I have to agree, they need to go out business. I have received 5 packages and shipped one and they have successfully delivered 2 out of the 6. The other 4 has been either lost, delivered days late or sent to a completely diiferent state. UPS is pathetic and I cannot belive people still use them. Today is my LAST TIME USING THEM.
But hey I guess they would be great to get rich off of, crooks can easily send a package, put insuarance on it and 9 times out of 10 UPS would loose it, and the shipper can just collect the shipping money. I mean that sounds like a good scheme for a crimanal and it’s almost granteed they will loose it.
I mean collect Insurance money. I really hope people do that to them and maybe that will make them more efficent and stop being so careless with the packages.
Time for round 3 for me!
Once again I get unuseable internet during peak hours. Ping times that are 300ms+ with 4+ dropped packets a min. Last two times I’ve had to diagnose the problem myself to keep them from sending a tech out just to say “uhhh i can’t fix that”. They’ve cost me over $1k in time off from work to meet people who never come or who can’t fix anything. Problem is network congestion and bottlenecking at the backbone. To me, it is fraud to market 15mb internet when a provider can even competently offer a 2mb connection.
Interesting article. Thanks.
How about performance after encrypting the netbook?
I know a netbook is meant only for internet surfing or a bit of office work.
this isn’t working for me.. I have linked contacts and I put in birthday fields for google also the regular phone contacts..
i checked that the calendar is in sync with the birthday calender but its still not showing up both in my phone and in the web google calendar.. 🙁
Im paying for 10mbps and have only been getting about 2 of it for longer than I should have tolerated. Frequent disconnects and frustration are things I had come to think I had to just live with. My relationship with my pc is a big part of my life. New Wave is making me hate my relationship with my pc. Lots of people don’t notice that they’re not getting what they’re paying for as they Facebook, IM, and casually surf but people who play WoW while streaming Netflix movies sure as hell do.
I’m right there with you. I have been using Vista for a while, and just moved to Win7 on my machine a few days ago (Christmas present from the missus). The media player was the first thing that leapt out at me.
Fugly as sin!
The shame of it is that Vista’s look was just about perfect – I’m already shoe-horning version 11 back in. *shrug*
I am having exact same issues you are having. I wonder if it is legal to say you have 15 meg service when actually you have nothing close to that.
The internet speeds that New Wave communications claim to offer are not even close to the speeds that you get. I’m supposed to be getting 12 meg and the closest to that that i get is maybe around 4. During peak hours I only get around 1 meg and sometimes less. I can’t understand how a company like this can stay in business.
I have a netbook and I used Truecrypt to encrypt the system. Everything checked out and seemed fine… till I did a reboot after everything was encrypted. It failed to boot. The setup was XP with NTFS partition (full drive). HP Mini 210-1010NR. I had to format and start from scratch. This was a major hassle considering TrueCrypt never failed me in the past.
thanks for the link to the driver. it helps a little bit. i cant believe it still leaves the buttons as a touchable area though. if i rest my finger on the button first and then use the pad with my other hand its fine but if i do them in the reverse order, it thinks im trying to move the cursor since i touched the “starting zone” first. i also still have to make sure i dont move my finger on the mouse button at all. why didnt they just put in a feature so that you can drag a rectangle over the area that you want to be able to use to move the cursor? in my case its even more pointless because i always set my mouse speed to the max anyway. if i put my finger in the starting zone and move it down, i will never ever in my life ever need the extra length of the touch pad provided by the buttons.
Nice! I don’t know if I could pull off a Photo 52 project…more like a Photo “Whenever I’m not feeling too lazy” project 😉
well.. i guess ill add to the group.. i pay for the 15mb down.. 1 meg up gamer package.. for the last few months my speeds have been dropping drastically..tonight.. jan. 13th.. at 9 pm.. my speed is less than 1 mb down while maintaining 600kb up.. with a 300 ms ping to newwaves missouri server.. this is not speedtest.net (which by the way is way slower than that to the closest server). ive had three techs scheduled.(last one didnt even show up. just called). first one told me it was my dlink gamerlounge router that was causing the problem.. unhooked it and swapped out the motorola modem with a rca modem that had a router built in.. speed did not increase.. second tech could not find anything wrong with anything inside the house but made a guess that it was congestion and told my wife that it would take an act of god to convince the company of that so they would fix it.. third tech never showed up.. called and said he would talk with the guys in the morning to see what they thought.. im getting pings higher than i used to play online with dialup.. cmon newwave.. your not dealing with a puter dummmie here.. ive built 100’s of desktops from scratch.. setup dozens of networks… i know congestion when i see it.. and paying over 60.00 dollars a month for something that isnt even as fast as dsl at night is wearing me thin.. very tired of tech support as i called 30 minutes ago to be told they would have a tech call me in 10 minutes.. still waiting.. so mike.. youre gonna get a call either voicemail tonight or tomorrow while youre at work.. i will spread the word.. this is very unacceptable of a company.. joe golladay.. malden missouri..
Newwave has been nothing but a complete headache for me since October.
The channels blank out constantly and when they come back, the audio/visual is out of sync. I called I don’t remember how many times to get it fixed without any progress. Then when they finally agreed to send someone to my house “Tuesday between 8 and 10,” surprise! No one showed up. Then I called to complain about it (and about having missed out on college class hours over it) and they told me 1) that no one was in the area at that time when a Newwave van was parked at my neighbors, so close I could literally see it from my house and 2) that they had scheduled someone to come “on the 20th from 3-5,” which is funny since no one told me that and I wouldn’t be home on the 20th from 3-5.
I was also told my bill would be credited for 2 months for all the problems I had, which was great until my cable was turned of due to non-payment of a bill I was told I’d never have.
Needless to say I am more than fed up. I called Friday, paid what I apparently owe so as not to hurt my credit and put in an order for cancellation at the end of this month. We’re moving in February and I had planned on taking Newwave’s service with me and adding phone and internet to it had they done anything, anything at all to fix these issues. But nope. So now my business and my money will be going to Windstream. Something I should have done a long time ago.
i haven’t really had trouble with newwave in somerset ky and when i do i can get it fixed calling them usually. i have 10 megabit and actually get that or better sometimes. sure it goes lower sometimes but not enough to effect using it. only thing i think could change is the upload speed. .36 megabit is kinda slow now. i have the cable too but i don’t use a cable box. onyl have basic and extended cable and cables goes to the tv. guess living in the city helps with this being closer to where ti comes from.
guess i am lucky then.
it is between these too but usually closer to 9 or 10 megabit.
are you using the Motorola sb5100 too?
Back off, Phillip. I just got YET ANOTHER java exploit via browser, and I was just doing some benign rental car searches on google. Disable JAVA! Thanks
I had an HP G60 and the touchpad is very good, the buttons are not apart of the touch pad, and are separated with a ridge so that your fingers don’t inadvertently slide onto and press the buttons. I recently used a friend’s new HP and it had a black trackpad with the buttons built in, oh my god, what a terrible piece of shit, I was blown away. I’m actually blown away at how shitty most trackpads are. The old school dell’s were almost the best, they’ve actually got worse and worse as the years have gone on… all they need is something simple with better software.
I’m using Vista SP2. Followed exactly word for word what Unit 193 said in post 12 and ended up with a £1,000 brick. It took me 24 hrs to try everything to make the PC work again. Nothing worked and I have spent another 24 hrs re-installing everything from scratch.
Leave it to Microsoft to take 15 years to develop an actually viable, stable product that at least works (NTBackup) – then discontinue it and replace it with the joke that is 2008 Windows Server Backup.
It’s shit like this that makes me hope the zombie hordes of hackers and virus-writers destroy them.
Completely agree regarding developer support. I don’t know who is in their marketing team for mobile devices. But it looks to me they hired bunch of rednecks who’re thinking like “HOWDY! LET’S START TO MAKE MONEY, PARTNER!”. What the fuck were they thinking about when they made developers to PAY for free applications!? The free apps that would promote and move this platform forward! Nope, you have to develop the application, you have to meet the requirements, you have to fuck your brain on thinking how to avoid platform limitations during implementation and at THE END … YOU HAVE TO PAY $20 … for possibility to upload your free up (with no ads) to marketplace! And of course you have to pay for each update of your application.
I remember the Rob Miles were bullshiting that each developer will be able to upload 5 apps for free. 5 apps, my ass! 5 submissions, each time you submit new app or submit update for your app – that counts! Once you made 5 submission be prepared to pay to be able to do more! I made 2 updates for 1 app (3 submissions), now I made 1 update for second app (+2 more submissions) = 5 submissions, and to make new update now I have to pay 20$.
In Samsung they have reduced Win Mobile support dramatically. Koreans realized this Phone is for retards and moved lots of developers from Windows Phone to Android platform dev. team. Hope LG will do the same shit soon.
Taking it back to Walmart what a bunch of Bullshit. Totally mis-leading. Powermat = Total fail.
Great pic! What were your f-stop, ISO, & shutter speed? Give it a try with a small aperture, lowish ISO, and low shutter speed (a second or longer). Should produce a neat ghosty effect.
I like this. Personally, I would crop the top of the photo so that the trees are no longer visible. It would give it an abstract feel.
Thanks! That’s exactly what I was looking for a long time ago. Should be just a tick within the Android calender.
I think what Gary on 12.30.09 was trying to ask about is the problem I am having. I was playing around with Ease of Access to see what it did. Immediately after doing that, my screen colors and text changed to something I do not want and have been unable to get rid of. The boxes are unchecked and the computer has been restarted, but I have same overly-white and different-looking funny screen. Any ideas?
WTF… nice… never think about this.. ease shit program… make me cant type with my keyboard.. when i press “R”, PC did like “start+R”… n now ease was STFU from my PC…
thanks a lot.. =)
I got a dv7 about two months ago, and I have agree this touch pad is so terrible afwul. It’s so annoy and unpleasant to use to a point I don’t want to recommend anyone to buy HP laptops.
Just this touch pad which makes HP laptops look bad…but I don’t think they have learned a lesson.
That is awesome! I love ancient ruins. We saw some in Sedona but they weren’t as large as that.
I appear to have the same problem as Ariz I applied the changes and want to reverse it. is there a way i can turn back my computer to restore settings from a previous day? sorry if this seems like a lame question but this is my first blogging experience and I am vintage in age
I had two sites with iPower a year ago and they were CONSTANTLY getting hacked. It was ridiculous, like every 3-4 months. And of course iPower blamed me. So I switched because iPower sucks. Now no more hacked sites and I’m happy.
company gave me this new HP probook laptop with the new touchpad tech. I feel like smashing it against the wall every ficking day! Can’t move the mouse around correctly and the text jumps around if you accidently even look at the touchpad. This is the biggest Pcs of shit to hit the market! HP should pull this out of stores and redesign.
I went out to a local arts and crafts store and bought some thin rubbery craft paper with adhesive on the back. I covered both of the buttons, but this seemed to somehow mess up the touchpad in general. The pointer was doing some weird things.
So I took the stuff off… Am also thinking of just getting either an external mouse and be done with it.
How this got passed quality control is beyond me. Everything else about the laptop is great.
It cannot be that hard to add a function to the Synaptics software to just make that area buttons only with no motion control. Either that or change the touchpad driver again.
Going forward I’m always going to look at the touchpad. A friend has an ASUS laptop and had very similar issues.
I’m just going to make sure there are separate buttons from now on.
is there an alternative? this garbage just isn’t going to cut it for me either. Can i instlal the old nt backup perhaps?
Neat! According to a MacGyver episode, you can also bust it with drain cleaner…except you’d have to have it plugged in and hot (Myth confirmed: http://www.gametrailers.com/user-movie/mythbusters-macgyver-light/184597). Using the BB gun seems a lot safer. Did you shoot your eye out?
This is really great! Don’t feel bad about the bulb. That type is so outdated and low-tech now, right? 🙂
I have a Pavilion dm4-1160us and wish I didn’t have it. The touchpad mouse is the worst I’ve ever experienced. Whoever designed it obviously never tried to use it. HP should recall all these crap laptops and replace the mouse – for free. I should have returned it right away.
Nick I am in the Taylorville area, and I just wanted to let you know a year later they still have big problems.
I looked at your first post in awe. I was amazed that I too am having the same issues with the customer service.
I have had it with Newwave to the point that I am no longer threatening them, I did switch to DSL, but I am trying to let them keep me as a cable customer. I contacted Mike Burns to see what he had to say. He told me he was going to try to help. I will see if he does, if this gets fixed I will post on here and let you know. I told him I will not pay any part of my bill until help has been received. It might not be the best idea I have ever had, but what other leverage do we as customers have.
Well we will see what happens. I hope that they do want to keep me as a customer. I will let you know if they do fix this.
Just wanted to let you know that a year later us customers are still in much of the same boat.
Thanks and have a great day!
I’ll throw in my 2cents as well – let’s face it Newwave SUCKS! We moved to Murray KY 3 years ago and had nothing but trouble from day 1! Same scenario as all of the other posts above: poor to no connection on ‘net, TV, etc. I call and call, tech come out and look dumbfounded and tell me they don’t know whats wrong. According to their equipment it should be working, but they stand in front of the TV and computer and can see that it’s not. I’m really sick of it, but they are the only game in my area except for satellite. And the people with satellite say that their reception/service is no different. Does anyone know of some watchdog or regulatory agency that we can contact? Having to pay $130/month for crappy service is just ridiculous!!
I had that all done. It shows fine on my Google Calendar but does not syn with my android phone even I have clicked syn for “Contacts’ birthdays and events” in the phone itself and had it clicked visible, it still does not show. ;(
Could you help me with the command prompt? I suck with using it after having not done so for many years. So I move the folder where I want it first? All I need is exactly what I will type into the command prompt.
The offending EA GAMES folder is located in “C:\Documents and Settings\Admin\My Documents” and I would like to relocate it to
“D:\Deadlands\The Sims 2 Crap”
Well, thanks. Guess I won’t be figuring this out anytime soon. Running on 4 hours of sleep means I have to be walked through everything. I found this: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896768 But in my current state, I’m not sure what to do with it.
I just downloaded it, but when I used the exe, the command box appears for a second then vanishes. It started this after I clicked “I agree” to the licensing. I’ll look for another. That one looked promising, so that sucks. Thanks for your help.
Okay, I’m gonna try this one. It looks like it has a good, easy to understand interface.
QUick question: do I need an empty folder in C drive called EA GAMES for this to work or not?
Thanks. Almost done here. I moved the folder where I wanted it, but it is also still where it was and it won’t allow me to delete it, saying that something is using it. I can’t make a junction if the folder I’m linking it to is still there. What do I do?
100% success, thank you. Now the volume bar minimizes the game for some reason, however, but at least the big problem is fixed. Thanks again.
Well here goes. I Too have received terrible service from this company. Our phone was out for ALMOST THREE WEEKS. I have the cable internet, phone package I take care of my mother who has heart problems. I was forced to go out and get both of us a cell phone during this time. Then they had the ____ to bill me for a full month. Then there is the cable. Has anyone noticed that the good channals are always out. when you call them, Its a 45 minute wait. Then they want you to let them know when there are channels out. Just how I wanted to spend my day off. Everyday off. They promise to adjust your bill and never do. and lets not forget the recording telling you to use there web site for your problems. When it is up its basically useless unless you are paying them for services you only get half the time. I agree they have crappy service. and there prices are Too.
Yet another COMPLETELY unsatisfied New Wave Communications Customer in the Bootheel of Missouri. My previous internet provider was AT&T, which unfortunately only had (and has currently) 6M speeds available in my area. On every single site that I use regularly, or even those that I used intermittently or even completely randomly, I would get a reliable ~1M give or take a few hundred KB.
Roughly 3 months ago now, I saw a New Wave tech doing an install about 5 houses down from mine on my street, and thought, “Hey, why not ask about their internet packages?” The inner geek in me was then extremely “aroused” by the concept of the 50M connection the tech told me just recently had become available in my area. I jumped on that in a heartbeat and barely batted an eye at the $105.00 pricetag. 50M was eons faster than what I had right? Surely it was worth an additional 45-50 bucks a month! When I first got the service, there was a slight improvement in streaming speeds/page loads from very common websites such as youtube, amazon, msn, google, bing, etc. Nothing to bow down in amazement of. So then I start doing speedtests on both the Windows XP Home laptop and the Windows Vista 32bit Desktop that I owned (and both worked!) at the time. These showed roughly 24-34M down speeds. (I only use wired connections.) So then I go to actually install a few games/apps/programs/updates/patches from such sites as Blizzard Entertainment, Sony Online Entertainment, Itunes, Microsoft.com and I realize I’m only getting an actual 2M down speed, which varies down to 1M randomly, but in the 3 months I’ve owned it and the tons of downloads I have done (or at least attempted) I’ve seen a total of about 12 minutes of speeds greater than 2M, and it was 5-6M on the same sites I had already downloaded these things, or had to redownload, because my hard drive died on my computer (Seagate firmware issue) a couple of weeks after receiving this internet. (My main rig at the time.) EVERY OTHER TIME I HAVE DOWNLOADED ANYTHING FROM ANYWHERE I HAVE NOT GOTTEN OVER 2M! It will reach 2M, hit 2.1, then drop to 1.6. Repeat, drop to 1.7. Repeat, so on and so forth. Never going over 2M. On this 50M connection! I have called New Wave Customer Service on the order of 10-15 times if not more regarding this exact same issue. They even sent an engineer to my house on one of these visits, and he plugs in his laptop and gets 32M on a speedtest. Like this is supposed to tell me something? I had just performed the speedtest before I ever called them, and saw what it said, but I also saw what I was getting in actual down speeds from a plethora of different sites. This could be downloading a YouTube vid with Realplayer, downloading an album from Itunes, downloading the game client for World of Warcraft, downloading the Star Wars The Old Republic beta game client, or even downloading updates from Microsoft. 2M.
So, I gathered as many details as I could about the symptoms it was exhibiting, mainly the fact that I could have the same download queued up multiple times (around 5 copies) and receive almost the exact down speeds on all 5 copies. Roughly 2M. Which is effectively 10M down. But for some reason I can only get 2M on a single file from anywhere. I then called New Wave, and spent the next several minutes attempting to explain my extremely frustrated situation to the apparently clueless customer support rep, and after a bit of this, the rep apparently thought he had muted his mic, and he actually paused for a minute then said “Shut the F*** up…” Immediately I was like, “Excuse me?” and asked to speak to his supervisor, and informed him of this incredible lapse in both judgment, customer service ability, and humanity in this individual. He (the supervisor) made sure he gave me his name/email, and said he would definitely look into this as this wasn’t the type of thing that was expected of New Wave Employees. Ya think???? Other than that he didn’t seem all that perturbed by this turn of events. Over the next month and a half or so up until now, I have called repeatedly about this exact same issue. Seeing a huge number on http://www.speedtest.net, then actually going to download something from ANYWHERE, and not getting over 2M.
This past Saturday (Aug 27th, 2011) my speeds dropped down to about 200-400KB/s with epic slowdowns to 5KB/s that was sustained over several hours. I immediately called, and they said (once again) “We’ll send a tech out.” This tech, (that I had seen several times already) seemed genuinely interested in at least attempting to figure out what this issue was, as clearly 2M wasn’t even close to what I was paying for, and he told me he would recquisition an laptop and a DOCSIS 3.0 like my own and test various points in the line up to my house. This was supposed to take place yesterday. Nothing was fixed as of this morning.
So today, I called and actually asked to speak to the on-duty technical supervisor, as clearly, all of the times I had recounted the exact symptoms I was having to the “normal” employees were either misunderstood, misinterpreted, or completely misplaced. After a 27minute hold, I then spoke to “Cody the Technical Supervisor” and then reiterated once again my situation. He at this point told me “Well, I was unaware that you were having these types of issues (i.e. the multiple files queuing at the same speed while one file only does 2M, pages taking sometimes over a minute to load (simple pages like email or bing) or especially since this past Saturday, roughly 40-50% of the sites I was clicking on were saying server not found, cannot find website, or check your internet connection, although the connection indicator at my status tray showed a valid connection, and the lights on the modem showing the same.
Cody then tells me that yes, this does sound like a modem issue, and he would make sure a tech brought a new DOCSIS 3.0 out today to see if that remedied the issue. He also told me that he was “teaking a few things” and shortly thereafter, my speeds normalized at their standard 2M.
At around 5:30, this gentleman comes to the door, a New Wave “tech”. And the first thing he does is the same thing all the other techs have done (and the ONLY thing the other techs have done) is run the speedtest.net and once again, unsurprisingly, it shows a high number, this time 42M. So at this point he tells me clearly there’s NOTHING wrong with the modem or the internet service. So I then begin recounting all of the issues I’ve had, and the fact that I only get 2M, and he says “Well, what servers are these?” I then tell him EVERY FREAKING SERVER. This obviously isn’t good enough, so we go and begin downloading things. The blizzard downloader at that was showing 2M. It would hit 2.1, then drop to 1.7. Hit 2.1 drop to 1.5, and repeat this forever. I also told him that I had downloaded the client for WoW, from the Blizzard Entertainment content servers (Blizzard Entertainment is at the very least one of the richest game developers in the world with BEEFY servers with which to handle their nearly 12 MILLION SUBSCRIBERS) and told him that 3 of the 5 guys that were in my ventrilo channel had just downloaded this same file that I had just downloaded, 2 with 30M connections getting roughly 12M and 1 with a 20M connection getting about 6.8M down, and all three had made it into the game (same size file) hours before I was able to on my 50M connection.
So Mr. Internet tech says well I’m going to go out back and check some stuff. I went and used the restroom, and went out back to smoke, and he wasn’t there. He was in fact out front, sitting in his van, speaking to someone on his cell. So then he asks me “Did you actually see these speeds these people told you they were getting?” and “They couldn’t possibly be getting those kind of speeds because the person he had just spoken with told him that no one would be able to download from them if they were pushing that kind of speed.” Unknown person on the other end of the line was CLEARLY an idiot with a capital IDIOT.
Mr. Tech guy then proceeds to in about as many words tell me that no one really gets over 2M on the internet anyways… to which I promptly replied, “So you’re honestly telling me that no one in the effn world gets more than 2M on the internet????? Are you effn serious? That is BS and you know it.” He then replied, “Well, I don’t know….”
So then I go into hardcore “You gotta believe that this is complete BS mode…” and we went into the computer and proceeded to download from several different sites where my undeniable download speeds were between 400KB/s-2.1M. He then tells me that he wants me to email him all those sites because he has the same internet I do, and my modem is showing 42M and his doesn’t show that much.
So I then asked Mr. Internet Tech what his download speeds were. He told me, “I don’t know, I just download stuff and let it do it’s thang.” This is suppsedly a high-speed Internet Technician that doesn’t even know his own actual download speeds?
So I set out to compose a list of commonly used sites with readily accessible downloads in addition to a few of the other game type downloads that he could attempt in addition to all these others (some of my examples included Microsoft where I could get nothing at all to download, and http://www.bing.com which would not load for 7 successive attempts, each time telling me that there is no internet connection even though my status tray and modem tell me otherwise) and thought to include some of the several complaints I had personally read over these past couple of months about New Wave Communications that reeked of the same S*** i’ve been dealing with all this time, and stumbled across this particular page, and felt obligated to include my own horror story. Needless to say, if this isn’t resolved by the end of this billing cycle, I’m going back to my much more reliable 6M connection from AT&T DSL.
So a word of warning to all potential New Wave Communications customers who hear 50M!!! and go “wow” and sign up, most likely you’re not going to get even 5% of what you’re paying for, and if this proves to be the case, New Wave will most certainly be rude to you, call you stupid, exhibit utter stupidity of their own, lie, and continue to charge outrageous prices for NOTHING.
Buyer be warned…
P.S. I have been on computers for nearly 18 years, spent the last 14 years on the Internet, and watched more download progress bars on more varied connections than this apparent “tech” from New Wave Communications, and I’ve personally seen speeds ranging from 0.1kb/s to 28MB/s.
In addition, the tech did NOT bring another modem to see if that remedied the situation as “Cody” had promised me would transpire today.
Also, the brand-new BEAST of a computer with a Gigabit NIC, running windows 7 64-bit is getting the same hideous download speeds as everything else I’ve ever plugged into this network. An awe-inspiring, mind-boggling, whopping 2M…
I’m in Catlin, IL, and I had DSL Elite (advertised download speed of up to 6 Mb/sec.) with AT&T for over 5 years. I’ve checked the speed with Speedtest.net many times, and almost never saw a speed of under 5 Mb, regardless of time of day (even peak hours). I only experienced one outage in all that time, and that was due to a driver sliding off an icy road into a telephone pole. And it was only down a few hours. I had some intermittent drop offs that were due to a failing modem, which they replaced at no charge. Pretty good service considering what I’ve gotten from NewWave. AT&T set a bandiwdth cap of 100 GB a month, and charges $10 for every additional 50GB. I use the net a lot, downloading, and playing online games for hours, streaming music, and video, etc. So, I decided I’d give Avenue Cable a try. They offer 15 Mb/sec. download for a few dollars more that what I was paying for DSL, and no bandwidth cap. A month after switching to Avenue, they got taken over by NewWave. I’ve experienced a dozen outages in 2 months of service, some of them lasting all night. Speeds drop considerably lower during peak hours, but not horribly bad every night. My ping in games is about 20ms, compared to 40ms on DSL, but DSL was steady and reliable, though its max. download and upload speeds are less. Things will be alright with NewWave for a week, and then it goes to shit. It’s bad enough I’m seriously ready to go back to AT&T DSL and try and live with the bandwidth cap.
I’m getting so peeved about it, I’m wondering about trying to organize other NewWave customers to put pressure on the company to upgrade their infrastructure to deliver on their promised speeds, even if it takes a civil law suit to get them off their asses.
Yes, Nick, my speedtest.net speeds are lower doing peak hours often, as are actual download speeds. Some nights I’ll see tests of 7 Mbps, and others much lower, some nights 10 Mbps. Some Sundays it’s so slow it’s barely useable. On the 9th (the day I wrote my first post here), the service went down entirely, and wasn’t restored until sometime the following afternoon. It’s been really good since then.
Hi Nick: I am running Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2. Note that I was not able to rename the Utilman.exe file until I assigned myself “full control” under “permissions” of the application file Property Security tab. I renamed Utilman.exe in c:\windows\system32 to Utilman.exe.old as you advised; however, when I clicked the “Ease of Access” button either on my login screen when booting or the button on the lock screen no such message appears on my screen that: “Ease of Access has been disabled by your administrator”. The button’s perimeter just highlights. That is not so bad even if it is good practice to let the end-user kinow what is going on. However, the adverse effect I got sometime thereafter was some sort of system bug in which my pointer froze. I am thinking that maybe the click not being properly processed by some error handling routine in the source code scripting may have caused this system instability. In fact, when I was in the process of changing the name of the application file to “Utilman.exe.old”, Windows warned me of possible system or application instabilities which might arise. Sure enough, my pointer froze even though logging off and back on recovered the ability to move my pointer again. I renamed the file back to “Utilman.exe” for fear of some other problems down the road. Can you advise? And please tell me what you were intending when you talked about extraction and “archiving” the file; you lost me there. Did you have a compressed version of Utilman.exe which you extracted? And since there are security rights which protect this System32 folder, did you also have to change your permissions. I think I am missing some piece of the puzzle here Nick.
First I definitely agree that Windows 2008 Server backup is a huge step back from NT Backup in terms of options and its performance leaves much to be desired as well. So lets talk solutions.
I build using Hyper V in much the same way described here and I use Windows backups ONLY for the bare metal restore of C: on the Hyper V host.
This cuts down the backup time.
So what about backing up the HyperV guests you say???
Check out the program Backup Chain. Its fast VSS aware and can handle your guest servers so you don’t have the headaches of Windows 2008 R2.
The best thing is Backup Chain is not to pricey. I just set it up for a client and had questions. I called tech support and actually got a person who was helpful.
Hope this helps someone else out.
Alright guys a lot of negative responses here and a lot of valid points, only setup for certain devices, have to use a tip if you don’t have one, yeah I get all that but I will say having a compatible phone (mytouch 4g slide) and buying the powermats from best buy’s online store (I bought the blackberry 9700 kit cuz it was 10 bucks and I just tossed the back cover) I have one at work and 2 at home and they are awesome! They charge quickly and its super convenient to just throw it down and it charges, plus when I pick it up it lights up the screen. So valid points that if you don’t have the
How did you people even contact New Wave? I have had no internet and no TV service for nearly a week. Unable to take off work to go to the local office. Tried their online form, no response. But every time I have tried to call them at 1-888-8NEWAVE I am getting a busy signal. Very frustrating that I can even disconnect to go back to Dish Network. Even when I had picture it was fuzzy like a over the air antenna, how can they even label this garbage as high speed broadband and digital?
Figured I might as well throw my war story in here. This is the message I just sent to New Wave. I’ll update if they respond:
I have been stood up three times by your company. It took me almost a month to even talk to someone about turning on service, and then they were a no show. When they did show up, and turned on my internet, the internet didn’t work for almost 2 days. A few days later I decided to get phone, internet, and cable. A week and a half ago I made an appointment for today (Oct 28th between 9a-12P) to have everything turned on. It is now 12:30 and nobody showed up. I am currently on hold, and the CSR has been rude, and her very first response to my complaints was to cancel my order. I own A1 Title 42 Service in Oklahoma, as a business owner, and a consumer, this is very poor customer service. As I explained to her, cancelling my order is not a solution to my issue. The solution is to send someone out here as promised. I have complained before to the CSRs when I had to call in over and over for no show, and when the internet didn’t work, and not once was I offered any compensation for my valuable time, frustration, and aggravation. I have more important things to do than sit on the phone all day trying to get service that I already had an appointment for. Not once when the technicians were going to be late, or just not show up at all did I receive a phone call letting me know. They simply let me sit here and waste my time. I still have my Verizon DSL account as I was testing your service before I shut down Verizon. I will admit Verizon does not have the bandwidth New Wave has, but their network is stable, I have never lost connection, and my services were turned on when they promised. Their customer service is outstanding. I would like either a discount on my service, or a credit to my account for all the time I have wasted waiting on techs, and all the time wasted sitting on the phone (most of it on hold). I would also like my services turned on today as promised (if at all possible). I really hope this message finds someone who remembers what customer service is, and how important customers are to your business. Thus far I have been made to feel very unimportant to your company.
If you are unable to contact NewWave Communicatoins through the 1-888-863-9928 number your local office. Please try our Facebook page(http://www.facebook.com/NewWaveCommunications), twitter page (newwaveinsider), chat us, or email email@example.com (Chat and local office are closed Saturday & Sunday).
I’m getting “No bootable partition in table” when I try to boot from the USB-drive. Any idea why?
To the person that wrote Four Years Late-Springfield Air Rendezvous. In order to qualify myself, please allow me to introduce myself as Kim Curry, the Air Show Coordinator for the last 14 years of Springfield Air Rendezvous. Let me also say that yes, the loss of our F-16s was huge to the air show but more so was the loss of many businesses that sponsored (paid for) this outstanding event. In addition, Springfield Air Rendezvous did not lose the ability to host a jet team simply because of the loss of the F-16s but it would have made life a lot more difficult to host a jet team. By the way, we hosted many years of Springfield Air Rendezvous without a jet team and the crowds simply didn’t show up when either the Blue Angels nor the Thunderbirds were present. We made due though and did well when the jet teams were on hand. In fact, Springfield Air Rendezvous, in its 24 years of history gave over one million dollars to charity. Air Rendezvous continues through its past funding to host aviation scholarship programs at Linolnland Community College. I hope this clears up some of your misconceptions of what ever happened to Springfield Air Rendezvous. It’s mostly about the difficult economy as we sought nor used any government funding. It was all private and corporate donations that funded this very expensive event throughout the years. BTW, we (meaning me and the hard working board of directors) all miss the air show terribly!
Can I boot AND RUN from a USB memstick like I can with Ubuntu 10.04 “Live CD”? Is the USB image a “Live” image? I have both a 4GB and an 8GB USB memstick available for use. I just want to install and test the features of IPCOP before I decide to run it in production. Then I will dedicate a hard disk to the installation and wipe it clean first. That way, I don’t have to wipe a hard disk, install IPCOP, test it and decide I do not like it and rebuild the wiped hard disk. I don’t have any spare hard disks available ATM. Money is tight. This is for a home network of 3 PCs to hide behind.
UPDATE: It’s been two weeks since my last post, and my complaint to Newwave. They offered me a discount for 1 year taking my monthly payment for phone, net, expanded cable to $99.00 instead of $126. They offered to wave my $25 installation fee. So another appointment was made, and again I sat here waiting, and again they did not show up. No call, no show. Yesterday Newwave called me asking if we could reschedule my install.. 2 WEEKS AFTER THEY DIDN’T SHOW UP!!! NEWWAVE IS A JOKE!! I asked the CSR why they didn’t show this time, and why they didn’t bother calling me again. She looked in the notes, and said she didn’t know, but maybe I wasn’t home.. LOL.. REALLY?? Maybe next time I should have all the lights in my house on, the car outside of the garage with the flashers on, and a bonfire in the front yard.. Maybe I need to open all my doors, and windows too.. Just to make sure they know I’m here.. Have you heard of KNOCKING??? Anyway I think I’m done with these jokers.. Take care!
I my gosh, you people have scared me to death. We just got a letter from Comcast and they are turning our service over to NewWave. We get fantastic service from Comcast, internet and tv. But reading all the commplaints have pretty much convinced me to bit the bullet and get Direct tv. Seems like just when you think you life is going smooth someone throws a wrench in it!
bbb or attorney general, local media, bill o’reilly, small claims court
bad enough i bank at, ‘fifth third’ – after dealing with those idiots, i just wanted to go home and watch game 6 of the world series…freakin’ ‘newwave’ was on cue with their weekly outage (cable, dsl/phone)
next day, every where i looked, ‘GAME 6 of the 2k11 world series, was the GREATEST WORLD SERIES GAME ever(EVER) played’
it’s definitely an inconvenience – but i pay for it; does that make it a fetish?
good luck guys
New Wave Cable service is slow to change stations.
Direct and Dish wasn’t.
The Internet is slow like Dial-up.
The phone service was slow to call out and a lot of times not work at all.
I told them about it 4 or 5 times and they have never came to do anything about it.
So I went back to at&t, DSL and DirecTV.
I did find a way to change it. Really strange though..
Go to Control Panel >> Region and Language >> Additional Settings >> Date
Change the “Long date” format to “ddd, MMMM dd, yyyy” (remove one of the ‘d’). This will change it from the “Long Day” format to the “Abbreviated date” format (i.e., “Thursday” become “Thu”).
Apparently the “Long date” (my terminology) also understands something about “Today”, but the “Abbreviated date” (again, my terminology) doesn’t, so instead of “Today” it says “Thu”. Because it doesn’t know it is “Today”, it lists the full time.
Stupid change from MS, but here is a workaround if you think it is stupid too and want your time back.
New Wave does suck big time.Their services just became available here in SE rural Indiana recently & after having Direct tv for many many yrs, I went with new wave’s bundle of phone, cable & internet saving me about $80.month which was what my phone bill was & also my direct tv bill was. But it’s not even worth it.My internet didnt work for more than 2 wks, I couldn’t stream netflix or anything for another week, & my phone hasn’t worked right since it was installed over a month ago.Cell phones don’t work where i live. I have spent a month on hold to talk to tech/customer service & when I get thru they say” I can rest your router”. I’ve called the president of new wave 2x.The service guys in the area are nice people, show up on time, & knowledgable, but customer/tech support all need fired.they r liArs.No one in my community can call me, my daughter lives in anearby town & no one in that town can call me, They get a recording that says my phone has been disconnected. one person who works at new wave trying to solve the problem actually asked me,”who all can’t call you, I need all the prefixes of their phone numbers?” WHen my phone was installed it worked for 1hr, the tech left, & it didnt work for the next 3 days. I had to drive a few miles to where my cellphone could work, several times in those 3 days, & they promised me they would fix it & they didnt. The only way I ever got it back on was to ask a local service tech I saw in his new wave van in the area.He came in , made 1 call, & they fixed it from the office in 5 minutes. a week later it was down for 2 days, no incoming or out going, then when they got my phone back on, my internet went out. Internet is not 5 its like old dial up speeed & gets off line on it’s won sometimes. I spent 4 hrs on hold one day, at 30 min intervals. im retired so i can do this. I told the pres, & all the techs that i have medical issues, My family worries about me if they cant speak to me daily, I cant call my dr, pharmacy, bank, post office, neighbors, utility companies or anyone in the area, & they cant call me. They got it fixed so i can call my daughter , but she still cant call me. I can now call my neighbors if i dial 1 first, it’s long distance & i wasnt informed. POint being, in over 30 days, with a phone that doesn’t work right, only one time has a tech support person ever called me back to c if they had actually fixed my d. phone. That’s because I told them to sit in their office all day & keep calling me till my phone worked, because Ive been calling them all day every day for 30 days telling them my phone doesnt work. The president called me back once, assigned someone to my case, & that was 2 wks ago & my phone still doesnt work. no one else has ever called me.I have to call them every day to tell them my phone doesnt work, & they have never sent a tech to my house about it, not that it would do any good, I told the pres. That I spent more $ in gas the 5 days I had NO phone, driving somewhere to call them, plus my time spent in 30 days calling them from home is worth something, than the discount they gave me on my bill. I asked the pres for free dvr service for a yr or 6 months for my time wasted & got no dvr. new wave knows my phone doesnt work, they don’t care, & they dont want to talk about it either.Guess I’ll try majic jack or vonage.
Holy cow, I am glad I am not the only one that is seeing this slowness. I am backing up only about 600gb to a USB drive and it has been going for 9 hours now and states 40% complete. My first reaction was “oh no, I plugged into a USB 1.1 port!” No dice, it is 2.0
This is a one-off backup I am doing to pre-seed DFSR data. I wanted to use Server Backup because that would ensure my file hashes would remain intact. Oh well, I do not have another 9+ hours to wait for this abomination to complete. I am just going to have to use Robocopy instead. Thanks for wasting a night of backup for me on a critical project, Microsoft.
Now, I truly do know about these issues, and trust me, even us technicians have these problems. Yes, ill admit on this bash-site, I am a New Wave Com. BBT1 tech. I work in the central Illinois region and I usually get good responses from my customers about the service. Now you guys/gals have your right to bash and complain and i dont blame you for a second, I am not here to defend NWC or anything like that (which im sure i probably should, but i didnt put my real name on here for personal protection reasons)i just want you to hear me out. I worked previously for a company called Avenue cable, before NWC bought the system. If any of you ever had Avenue service, you know what bad service truly is. Yea we “offered” phone, up to 15mg dsd, but you were lucky if it EVER and i mean EVER worked…….period. And truly the techs didnt care because they didnt have to. since NWC came in, we had to care, otherwise we are out of work. I can see the changes NWC has brought to my area because i live it every day. New wave techs are usually your most helpful people ever, because we have to be, we have to meet certain quotas with re-occurring T.C’s. We are all trained and professional….most of the time, i mean, comon, we all have our bad days where we really dont feel like being threatened because someone didnt pay their bills and they feel the right to treat us like dirt, like something they stepped in and think they can just do/say to us whatever they feel. Now from reading this, you guys didnt have too many bad thing to say about the techs, mostly the call center, youve got to realize, these are people that do not have field training, they have a list of things in front of them to say and if they dont work they send us out, and then usually, the techs can fix it. There are occasions in which we cannot, due to problems that we cant resolve. Now, sometimes we do cut corners, and do not chastise me, because we all do it in our every day lives. You try to make it to 20+ houses in 8hours when each one can take up to an hour. Then after youve worked all this overtime, try getting yelled at by your boss because you didnt make appt’s on time and how theyre going to fire you if you dont “shape up”. Ill admit, our service may not always be at 100% or ever, all im asking is that people start being a little more thankful and nice to the field hands, because its us that keep the system running, not management, its us thats working out in a blizzard when the cable goes down, not the call center and its us that misses our weekends, family events, child milestones and literally have a great potential of dying all in the name of your entertainment and enjoyment of services, not you. So all im asking is please, be a little nicer to the techs, i understand that you all are frustrated, and i truly see where you are all comming from and i am in no way trying to put anyone down here, but there is no and i mean no reason to flag me down just to cuss me out because you feel like being nasty to us to make yourself feel better. Thank you, i hope you will take this message into consideration, happy holidays to you all.
1) so far have never had a problem with TV
2) so far Internet has and is giving me speeds that I have paid for
3) so far no problems with Telephone
4) So far I have called the Tech support people twice for problems that did not apply to the service of the system and both times they arrived either on time or early and problem was fixed and questions answered.
4) SORRY I cannot join in the bashing above but haven’t had any of the problems you are all complaining about
Let me join the crowd also! I had newwave high speed internet and like everyone else is saying: “It Sucks!” So, I switched over to AT&T! From what I’m hearing, newwave is suppose to be getting brought out by Times & Warner here in my area. So, I guess we’ll wait and see how good or bad that they service is around here! I have a question to the experienced internet surfers: “Which internet service provider is the best and the fastest and gives a continuous signal without losing connection and having to reset your modem by unplugging it damn near everyday?” From the area that I’m in, the only isp is newwave, at@T and our electrical company, which don’t have speeds no higher than 10 mbps! I just want a good isp at a decent price without going through all the hassle! Is it one avaible anywhere?
You need to have all contacts and birthdays in important people section on your agenda. Then it will sync both ways.
I knew about this a long time ago and it is very nice however it is missing one thing that I would like to see. I would like to be able to know how old that person is. I’m still looking for a calendar that will do that
A really useful program, and I thank you for steering me to it. But the one option you like best is one I don’t use! I find it more natural to access the window menu from the window itself.
Thanx from Slovakia… I spend lot of time adding birthdates to contacts and after that I was very angry when they wasn’t in calendar. It was simply and it works very well… 🙂 (google saw me this page as first when i enter my problem)
What is the name of the repair shop in dallas Texas that fixed these TA’s for the show?
It’s frustrating that every couple of months I find myself spending entire DAYS troubleshooting or working around Microsoft bugs like this one.
With MS Server Backup I tried everything, network, USB, local disk, doing specific folders, doing whole volumes and this is what I have found:
I use MS backup for the bare metal recovery because that one seems to work and does not seem that slow.
I don’t want to backup all my virtual machines because that drive is too big and because some of the VMs are only for testing and don’t have to be backed up.
At first I tried MS backup and ran into the problem where it is not compatible with Advanced Format (the newer bigger USB drives). Then I ran into the fact that it is unbearably slow.
I downloaded a backup chain trial based on the comments above and it really is simple and fast. It was taking a while in the “deduplication” stage but it seems that speeds up incremental backups later. I can always turn it off. I also like the fact that I can compress or not and use generic compression algorithms.
MS Server backup: 1hour 47minutes
Backup chain: 33minutes
I`m having he same problem that Tim stated in post #31 on April 15th, 2011.Sorry but I`m a 61 year old computer dummy.I removed it i day and it was back the next. Can you help.
Ha, I was thinking to put up such a page, this is truly a pitiful service in Southeast Missouri. Now I am informed they have implimented bandwidth limits. Stay away!!!
I encountered a problem when following these instructions, did everything as instructed, but it failed with error 32 (output media locked).
Found that by closing the explorer window i was using to look in the directory containing the file solved the problem and this works now.
Basically close all non-essential explorer windows down before attempting this.
Changing the long date format to leave out the day of the week entirely (ex: “MMMM dd, yyyy”; it’s in the pulldown) also works.
After running this syntax dd if=ipcop-install-usb-fdd-2.0.3.i486.img of=\\.\g: bs=1k
I got this message. is this ready for booting? Thnx –>

what is lacking in my file? can you help me fix this problem. thanks!

I have some great memories from the blue angels at the air show and I would have loved to take my son to the same show. Its disappointing that the show is gone.
I read through this article that you wrote and, I must say, I thank you so very much for doing so. NewWave’s internet has been an immense issue ever sense we signed up for that piece of garbage, as I simply cannot talk to anyone on Skype without it outing on me in the middle of conversation, as I wait for 3 hours for it to go back on. Heck, one time when we called them after a major outtage had occured earlier that afternoon, they had people come over to rewire something for $50. Did nothing, and we wasted $50.
But then, after reading through this, I suddenly learned why this is. They know that the only other choice we have is obsolete dialup, so they truefully don’t care how crappy their service is: as long as it attracts the most customers, their greedy selves will be happy. It also reassures me that we’re not the only having problems with this unacceptable ISP.
Anyway, once again, thank you so much. This really uncovers the true facts behind why I can’t surf for an hour or two without an irritating outage occuring near me.
Oh God I couldn’t agree more with the title.. It’s terrible having NWC the ONLY internet available out here (minus Verizon which doesn’t have FIOS so it’s not reliable either) and it’s terrible. I’ve never begged for a company like Comcast to come to my town… but it’s time. I hate NWC. The guy that comes and fixed issues before is awesome, he does his job well.. but the company and stuff out of his control is atrocious. Terrible speeds. No upload ping over 1. I used to pay for 15 MBPS and it Never reached passed 10-12 so I dropped it to 10, and I still get the 10-12 but it drops out often. A new maintenance every other week. Slow speeds. Goes down far too often. It seems that sometimes even during a good test it’s just incredibly slow.
As soon as the former internet company (i think it was Frontier) was said to be being replaced by a new ISP, I was excited. But it turned out to be even worse than before, and I didn’t think it was possible.
Two and a half years and counting! If the shelf life of this page alone isn’t enough to dissuade people from using New Wave I don’t know what is. I never really had any technical issues with the service. I sit on AT&Ts Redback Pipeline which New Wave leeches off of for this area so my speeds were fairly consistent. My problems came when it was time to pay the bill. I used to have a direct withdraw situation set up with them, but when they started drawing more money from my account then they should’ve I killed that and went to paper billing. About the second or third month into that they tried to tell me that I had failed to pay for the previous month and still owed that balance. I wasn’t happy but what could I do but save my receipts for the future? Another three months on and they did it again, only this time I had the proof. That’s what I thought anyways. Even with the receipt in hand they told me that I still owed a balance of $200 give or take so I had them cancel the service. It was a few years ago so I can’t remember the exact amount, but all in all I believe New Wave outright stole about $600 from me . Who am I going to talk to about that?
Your tip helped a lot. I missed so many birthdays in my calendar.
What I do not understand is why do you block people from outside USA to view your website? The SPAM you mentioned comes predominantly from your country 🙂
HA I just found this because I was googling if new wave customers had the same problem I had. I pay for the 10mbps and get on average around 1.5-4. I called and they said they guarantee 90% of the 10mbps and … well, I have been their customer for 1 month and have yet to hit anything above 4. I called to have a tech come out and he did not show up. I cannot get them to do ANYTHING except drag their feet, blow off appointments, etc. We play a lot of online games, star wars, wow, etc and it dc’s CONSTANTLY. It lags all the time and it is just unacceptable. I have no other option really in the area. /sigh. I’m at the point that I’d rather just have no internet at all, than keep paying them. And I had to pay the bill upfront, before I even used the service, I guess they probably get a lot of cancellations in service and want to get SOME cash out of it before people give up on them.
Ups people are some of the hardest working people. Most of the time ups drivers only deliver what’s on their truck that day. So If you didn’t get a package right away it’s probably because the shipper didn’t ship it out right away. I would use ups out of anyone and still do because they are the best.
After several wine tastings at local retailers, supplied by local distributors I’m convinced that the distributor is just touting their slow movers. I was afraid I was losing my teste and smell until I enjoyed a first growth Bordeaux. Just opening the bottle the bouquet met me half way. I think from now on I’m going to either start my own group or just go to private tastings.
Thanks for finding this, I was afraid I would have to write an app to do this. You are correct that Google needs to unbury the nice features it spent so much time developing.
At least I can still do most stuff on the phone directly unlike with a iPhone.
Very cool, I am glad I found your website. When you did this upgrade, did you end up with a rooted device as well?
The one thing that frustrates me more than anything else is not being able to get rid of carry “crapware.”
So awesome, can’t wait to try this when I get home! I have a fresh install of TS2 (all EPs) on Windows 8 on a 60gb SSD, and I’d forgotten how much space the sims takes! I haven’t even added my downloads folder yet (forcing myself to clean it out first), but I don’t know if I want to move the folder to a different drive. The game takes 20 seconds to load vs 20 minutes on my previous computer, so I’m hesitant to move my EA Games folder to a normal drive.
My name is Joshua Mischler. My fiance and I have been new wave internet customers for approximately 2 years. Over the past several months we’ve been plagued with constant internet issues that no one at our local call center seems to understand, or care to fix.
We ordered the 15mb cable package approximately 2 years ago for steaming video and internet gaming. Initially our problem began with slower than normal speeds which we complained about and eventually just got used to. Then came the connection dropping which has been going on for the past 4-5 months and despite numerous calls to the call center and even speaking to the local network engineer Bart Kotter, the situation is still being left unresolved and ignored. Here’s what happens.
I have 3 computers on my home network. Its your basic simple home network with security enabled no special bells or whistles. 2 computers can be logged into Skype, AOL instant messenger, world of warcraft, and a voice over ip server. As long as these computers do not disconnect from any of these services voluntarily, they will remain connected and be able to do whatever they please.
When the 3rd computer tries to connect to anything, it cannot. If either of the other 2 computers try to open a browser and go anywhere on the internet, they cannot. If they disconnect from any of the programs currently running and try to reconnect, they cannot. If you reboot the modem and router, no one can connect to anything.
All the while, the link lights on the modem say I have a solid connection, as well as the network notification in the system tray. If I attempt to open a browser and visit Google it will time out and ask me to reload. However, if I open a command prompt and ping Google the ping is successful. This problem will go on for anywhere between 20 minutes to 4 hours.
Now I’m no internet dummy. I hold a CCENT Certification, as well as an A+. I know how to diagnose a connection issue on a home or small business network without much of an issue. After checking over my own hardware to make sure that I personally don’t have anything interfering with traffic, I’ll call new wave’s support line. The only thing the technicians can tell me is “yes I can see that your modem needs to be restarted”. I’ve had a tech visit the house and replace the wall socket for the cable itself, the modem, the filters, run a new RG-11 cable, and I’ve personally replaced the router twice. This problem at this point is on new wave’s end and the best they are offering me is to discount my bill monthly.
Recently I received a call back from the local network engineer for new wave Mr. Bart Kotter. Mr. Kotter contacted me on December 16th at 6:45pm EST and discussed the problem with me. He assured me that this problem wasn’t a bandwidth issue as he personally had added another gigabyte of overhead to my grid on the network. He then proceeded to tell me that he’d begin flooding my home modem with packets to see if we have a packet loss issue or if its something else. Mr. Kotter gave me his personal cell phone # and his work schedule so that I could get in touch with him at the moment the problem started acting up and he could look into the issue first hand. Since then I’ve heard absolutely nothing back from Mr. Kotter in regards to my issue despite my attempts to contact him personally during the outages.
Below is my contact log with Mr. Bart Kotter.
December 16th 6:45pm EST
Mr Kotter calls me personally to discuss the issue.
December 30 8:42pm EST
Text Messaged Mr. Kotter. “Hello Mr. Kotter, This is Josh Mischler. Have you figured out what my internet issue is?” I received no response
January 4th 9:05pm EST
Left a voice mail on Mr. Kotter’s personal cell phone. No response.
We left town to visit family on December 21st, and arrived back home on the 30th. Since arriving back we’ve had nothing but disconnection issues, time outs, reload requests, our service is practically UN-usable. With 2 weeks of solid up time and usage on our connection, I would think that a network engineer working for a national company would’ve come up with something. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind paying for cheap cable internet. However, I’d rather pay full price for what I ordered in the first place and not have to deal with crabby / rude customer service technicians.. Its hard to watch netflix or do any gaming or downloading on internet that will not connect.
I’ve whittled down to a very short fuze with the 1 888 new wave customer support line at this point and I’ve decided to take this up to ladder. I will however give credit where credit is due. You do have a night manager by the name of Zeth who has been dealing with my issue off and on for the past 2 months. He’s done a wonderful job so far and has been the only sincere tech or manager I feel I’ve dealt with yet..
At this point I’m taking the step to post my complaint publicly on your facebook page as well as getting in touch with Mark Bookout the General Manager for Southern Indiana. I’ve also called the President’s Hotline to try and get this situation resolved. I am tired of being ignored.
This is a total crack up – I love your image!! – Me and my college cringe when we have to use UPS.. UPS has a digital system where you can book them to pick up stuff, but it usually doesn’t work and during this process of it not working, your laborious patience of trying to make it work gets you more and more pissed off…. One day I got so pissed i insisted that UPS customer service put me onto management and guess what number they gave me!!!! The f100 mercedes team. beats me. I did try to chatting the guy up but that didnt work either…
ANYWAY my colleague comes up to two days ago and is like “hey the UPS website booking worked!” and he showed me the AWB which the site printed – and I was like “O boy, maybe i am giving them a hard time, like poor UPS”
and then just today my colleague is like “UPS suck! they didnt pick up parcel. UPS said “an AWB for the package hadnt been generated in the system yet as it hadnt been picked up, so they cant help with locating the order for the pick-up”
– crazy and insane and ludicrous
So my colleague gets on the phone to them, and customer service read a script which doesn’t answer the question at hand.. and anyway my colleague got increasingly pissed off throwing the phone down to recheck the parcel out the front at reception – Luckily they had not hung up, and he’s is tried to ever so simply and straight forwardly explain that they are really bad and that the extremely of pain they generate is comedic
… anyway the phone call solution is that today when they pick up the parcel, the UPS guy will bring shipping forms we will fill out by hand and call UPS for a pick-up – so we will see.
Some companies in different countries [italy] [india] insist on using UPS – so maybe they are better in other countries – but I don’t enjoy their service in Australia. I like DHL best!!
New server, freshly installed. Backup completes at 2GB/minute.
Add 50GB of data ; backup speed now starts at 1GB/min and gradually slows to 0.1GB/minute ..
Look for option in the “General Preferences”, called “Disable always on top while fullscreen applications are focused”.
You may have to uncheck and recheck the “always stay on top” option.
Same story here. Paying for 15 down and lucky to get 1. I turned in a complaint via online contact us. They came out a couple days later said its a known oversubscribed problem where I am at and that parts were on order for my area. That was 4 months ago still the same speed, im in contract and I plan on taking screenshots at various times and emailing them to fix and when it doesnt get fixed I will just leave and tell them to see me in court when they dont get their payment, early term fees. When the contract is not upheld no legal basis for the contract. Maybe newwave is still reading this, hopefully, SESSER, IL.
I worked during a two week Chrismtas rush as a temp worker a long time ago for UPS. I predicted then that people would grow tired of UPS and go back to the postal service. I’m sorry to say that UPS is still here. We packed a large semi full of Christmas packages as qucikly as we could and as full as we could. Mashed boxes everywhere. We were cogs in a poorly run machine. I hope UPS goes out of business I really do.
Trying to call tech support is useless. Can’t even get through to talk to anyone. Places you on “hold” and tells you to wait until a tech support person can answer your call. I waited 35 minutes!!! Had to listen about all of their offers and still no one answered the call. What a deal. I’m switching to dish or the new boy on the street Clearwave. NewWave SUCKS!!! BTW … I HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO GET A HOLD A TECH SUPPORT PERSON WHEN I CALLED. What a joke!
I loved the air show as a participant in the 2000 Air Rendezvous. I was a USAF Thunderbird Electrician on the F-16’s. I liked the local AG unit as their F-16’s were close to ours (in tail #’s)
I recently found a license plate from that great time in a rubbish pile. It was lost for 10 years – I almost cried because it was so special to me.
We miss you Springfield!!!
It never ends with these people. I’ve had nothing but trouble with them and have NEVER had ANYONE call me back. I’ve had them blatantly lie to me.
I’ve also filed a complaint with the FCC and they are useless, although a rep did call me after filing.
Am getting ready to file another one with the FCC and add my complaint to the others filed with the,BBB.
Does anyone know how to put this company out of business?
Has anyone ever actually found the -ago format useful and been glad for it? I think it’s safe to assume that most of the time that someone actually wants to examine the timestamp of a file, they will probably want either the entire date and none of the time, or the date and time down to the second.
I just had to determine the time (down to the second) that I created a file this morning so that I could enter it into a date field of a web page, but thanks to Microsoft, that was incredibly hard. I couldn’t use Explorer to do it because it only showed the minutes, and the Properties dialog box showed none of the time at all. Even the command-prompt won’t show the bloody seconds.
How does something like this pass quality-control at Microsoft? How can they think that holding back information from users is a good thing? ◔_◔
Virginia was such a strong woman with a generous heart. She gave of herself and time without question. She was always a nurturer and a great cook! She will be sadly missed by those who knew her, but most of all her boys, grandchildren and her great-grandaughters! Faith is knowing something to be true without seeing it. We know, because of our faith, Virginia has gone “home” and has been reunited with her loved ones who passed before her. Those left behind, will honor her memory and look forward to the day they see her again! God bless you Virginia!
It’s not PEBKAC. Maybe hardware compatibility issue. Everything is OK when I try to boot this USB on my Laptop, but it show “Boot error” when I boot on 2 other PC.
Hi thanks for such a usefull application, ive down what you said and its creating the USB boot flash, but when i point the boot to the USD on the workstation that i want to install on its give “Missing perating system” error

Since New wave has taken over my ISP it has gone from bad to HORRIBLE!!! alot of sown time, intermittent service and super slow speeds. When I hade problems with the old ISP company they were super prompt on answering the phone and tried everthing they could to help. New Wave, puts me on hold for long periods of time and just says there is a problem in your area without even asking me for my account etc. and they do it in a rude way. It has benn 5 days now of major intermittent service and after 3 days of calling cant even get them on the phone now.
Figured out that this trick from Eric Singer works also with Windows 8. Thanks a million! Previously i have to wait until after midnight to be able to get the exact creation date of my new files – incredibly stupid user interface!!!
I wanted to disable utilman.exe easily, without having to deal with security permissions, file replacement, etc. I took a different approach and decided to use what I like to call the “debugger trick.” There’s a registry key which is intended to automatically launch a debugger when an application starts. While the debugger is meant to start the application and attach, we can specify just any executable which will be run instead.
Start regedit.exe and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Image File Execution Options. Once there, create a new key named “utilman.exe” (without quotes). Then right-click in the right pane and select Create > New string value. Name the new value “Debugger” (without quotes) and change it’s value to “systray.exe” (without quotes as well). Changes are applied immediately; clicking the Ease of Access button won’t do anything any more. If you want to revert the changes, just delete the “utilman.exe” key you created.
What about systray.exe? It’s a little stub program which was first introduced with Windows 95 and used to handle the system notification area. If you killed systray.exe, you would lose notification icons. It’s not really used any more in the newer Windows versions but it was probably kept for some backward compatibility reasons.
Great find! I’ve been fighting with time drift on one of my Win2k3 servers for days but this is the solution I’ve been looking for…many thanks!!!
When I try your method with my game files(On WIN7) it replies with:
Cannot create file when file already exists.
This is my cmd command:
C:\Users\Smiley\Documents>mklink /j “Electronic Arts” “e:\EA Games Files From Do
cuments(moved with link junction)”
Any opinions about this?
Perhaps the following will help others.
I was unable to make a usable boot disc using the dd.exe option mentioned here. I looked up problems with this and eventually came across a solution that worked for me. Namely to first run a “Clean” operation on the flash drive after running “diskpart”. And then to use a application called “physdiskwrite” to create a usable bootable IPCOP usb drive. http://m0n0.ch/wall/physdiskwrite.php
NB Run as administrator under Windows 7!!
Damn, that works like a charm. Though one can’t access those handicap programs anymore it now closes a big security hole which could grant you the possibility to take over the system.
Thanks for that workaround!
I have been with AT&T for 30+ years phone and the last few years on their DSL for Internet which everyone knows also gives the signal for your Netlflix. I dropped them June 6 when they said we would have no service for 11 days. We didn’t even have a dial tone which would been great if not for our cell phones to call them.!! There was no storms in the area and no cause for such a long down time or they could not contacted their long life customers to let them know anything before pulling the plug on us. The very next day we switched over to New Wave. I was pleased with the faster Internet and my wife needs it 3 days a week at home when away from her office. Yesterday the 17th the Internet was down from about 9 to 11 am and again this evening for a couple hours. After my wife being on the phone for way over 1/2 an hour she got someone to answer for Customer Service. They lady told her they are working on it since we are in the Westvill, Il. area where they have an office. But good luck calling that since they are not in the phone book. Under Charter I could call them or stop by the office about 3 miles from me if I had a problem and a repairman was sent right away. New Wave informed me they just collect money at that office and store their repair trucks there. I go Whattttt!! I cant even avoid the 1/2 hour wait through their “money saving measures” of not being able to call the office or stop by to report it.?? This cable service has had a new owner every few years from Charter to Avenue to now New Wave. If the problems persist I have no option to reup again with AT&T with the slower DSL but least it pretty consistent. Charter had a Monopoly on the Internet service and was raising their rates about every 6 months til we dropped them. I warned them one day when paying my bill,” Looks like you have competition in the area now.” They asked who and I told them since I was in reach of AT&T sub station to get the Internet. Charter didnt know about that and maybe thats why they sold out. Their repairmen at the time told me Yup our name gets changed every couple years. I dont want to go back to Ma Bell but when it comes to messing with my Internet and Netflix I take that seriously and will not stay. Thanksss
Thanks Salamander, the key part is to uncheck then recheck always on top after changing the disabled always on top… option.
I Notice that the last response was 12/2013, so I may be late in getting on here… I have been a New Wave Customer for around 2 years and really have had no problems with the internet or phone (I do not have the TV)
I am retired and am on the Internet off and on most of the time most days…. I cannot say that I have NEVER had a problem, but only once did I call support (Due to it “self Healing” in an hour or so) and a technician was out in about 4 hours and fixed the problem which was not actually with NW but with the modem…
I routinely check my download speed and am always at or more than I am paying for…
I am sorry you guys/gals are having the problems, but they just have not plagued me.
Thank you for commenting and keeping this updated even 8 years later, you’re really awesome and I don’t think you got the recognition you deserve! Thank you!
Works also with Windows 8.1.
It would have been nice to be able to switch back and forth, or even put the time as a popup when hovering over it BUT be able to select it and copy it.
Oh, well … it is a brilliant accident to find out that MS matches the day of the week to decide whether to display a relative or an absolute time. Eric Singer, you’re DA MAN!!!
BTW, anyone knows how to do the same in Google? It has the same “feature”
I’ve been hating this (and a lot of other things) about Win7 for a long time, but only today did I bother googling it. Nicholas, thank you for griping about it; and Eric, thank you for figuring this out.
And yeah, I hate Win8 even more. But I’m trying to pace myself. Gotta save some for Windows 9.
thank you for sharing this!
Google is yet to integrate this seamlessly – and I see that you shared this four years back.
Yeah, it’s pretty much shit all the way. Disable all the features and you can ALMOST work with it. It’s the worst possible thing not to work though since you consider how many clicks you will need to perform over the life of the notebook. It’s kinda like learning to tie your shoes with no thumbs. I hate it…
New Wave Communications SUX’s big time you would
think a company with Communications as part would
at the least be good at communicating and their
customer service leaves a great deal desired.
Unlike many of I didn’t choose New Wave. I had my
internet service with the city of Poplar Bluff, MO. Who sold the Cable and internet service to New Wave for butt load of $cash. I ended up their
crappie service by default. For example the billing service switched over from the city of Poplar Bluff in Sept. 2014 I received my last bill
from the city in Aug.2014 stating that any all future billings would come from New Wave.
However it didn’t happen that way instead the month of Sept. came and went with no bill in the mail on Sept. 26 2014 I started call their service
and could make contact with any one I also went on their Webb site and tried contact by email still on response. I sent at least 4 emails several surveys voicing the problem still no response was given earlier week I received a phone call threating to shut off my service for nonpayment of the bill that I never received.
So had to pay $103.65 for service from Sept.21,2014 thru Oct.21,2014 and the jerks still shut off my service. So after doing due diligence
and checking prices of other ISP’s I have decided
to go with AT&T as my service provider.
And not my time crying over New Wave Communications.
Ever since newwave has taken over my local ISP, my internet does not work from 5pm-midnight, They have oversold bandwidth in my area and refuse to fix it. I have talked to several techs and called 15+ times over 2 months and still nothing, stay away.
Nicholas, Eric, thank you so much! I’ve been googling for that several times over the last years, but only today I managed to enter the right key words :-))
Add me as another very unsatisfied customer. I’ve been paying for 10Mb down (the max they offer here) and I’m lucky to get 2Mb (even at off peak times). Called and had them send someone out and the tech flat out said that there was nothing he could do because the area is oversold and congested. My question is, how the f*ck can that be legal?
Really is sad that a company like this can have such a substandard product for so long and still remain in business.
I can just “copy and paste” Nick’s original post, as this is the EXACT situation I have been in with NewWave. I fought with them over the exact problems for a year or two, then switched to a different provider, and actually enjoyed the internet for a little over a year. Now that company has sold out to another company not much better than NewWave, so here I am, back with NewWave, thinking maybe since it has been a year, it won’t be AS bad. WRONG!! NewWave is THE WORST company I have ever dealt with in my 41 years on this earth, and I have dealt with a lot of companies.
And it is still exactly as bad as it has been, in my community, for the last 3 years. And I absolutely REFUSE to call and talk to the idiots. My six year old knows more about troubleshooting problems than their “techs”, and definitely knows better how to treat, and talk to people than their “Customer Service” reps. NewWave is a joke. NEVER, EVER pay for their service if you have ANY other choice at all!
I can honestly say that we have had no real issues with New Wave services, a few latency issues with the internet and some pixeling issues with HD but just a few times.
My only beef is not enough HD channels and no real pay per choices.
I work for another cable company but live outside of our service area which is a big bummer.
New Wave definitely keeps the video rental store in business here in Dexter.
Overall, happy with the service.
Hey, I have the same issue as Smiley, but removing the EA Games folder isn’t fixing it. I’m also running windows 7, any ideas?
Oke; more info: I do get a symbolic link folder, but it goes into my User map (C:\User\Erthana ) instead of in My Documents, and moving it doesn’t help.
Every time I call tech support it’s a different problem, even when I know what the problem is. Everyone in this region has the same issue – slowness and outages at night. Only one tech support guy so far has admitted that it’s the local circuitry bandwidth limitations, but when I called to ask when that would be completed they said it already was.
Wow really? I never would have noticed.
So of course, they want to send a guy out to look at my house wiring and my modems. And that’s their only ‘solution’. But there’s nothing wrong with them. And that’s as far as I got while trying to solve this problem that every poor soul in this area is having.
You’ll never get around the run-around. There is no victory for the customers. Spread the word. Get out while you can.
Ok I’m a little confused . You said ” Once you move the folder you need to create something called a “symbolic link” from the old location to the new location. These instructions are for Windows Vista only. This can be done on XP with a program called “junction” but I’m not going to provide those instructions as XP is an 8 year old OS now and is a thing of the past.” is this still possible with Windows 7 ? I’m a lot computer illiterate so any step by step would be really helpful . Thanks
Fantastic workaround. Why in the world would Microsoft assume that if the file was created, modified or accessed “Today” then I wouldn’t want/need to see the the precise time? I too agree that “5 hours” ago is NOT what I wanted to see!
Now I’m emboldened to search for my other pet peeve, Windows Explorer listing all files in KB. That should be customizable, after all, ” KB” is almost the same width as “,000”. So far the solutions are using PowerShell or other programs.
Well add me to the list of haters and one day I might just find the one person that WILL listen and WILL do something about New Wave’s BS.
Same here. I call and call and call complaining that the internet is not working. Day after day after day. Oh, we’ll send a technician out there. The technicians, and I say that very lightly because they are nothing but a bunch of low paid “yes” men…or boys….some with very smart mouths who think it’s funny to tell a customer that if they don’t like the service they are getting, to call up the company and tell them to disconnect it. Yea, I’d want my business run by this bunch of idiots.
Now let’s get to the problem. Or should I say excuses….?
The problem is “we have too many people on the lines and we just don’t have the banwidth to take care of them all. But we’re working on it”.
REALLY? How the hell long does it take to “work on it”, because I’ve called for months….time and time again and I keep getting the same damned excuse! But you let my bill go a few days over, and boy how fast they find my line to shut it off!
Here’s MY problem with all of this BS. If your tech comes to my house and hands me a line of crap like that, and he tells me that between the hours of such and such when all the kids get out of school and start gaming, and then again during the hours of such and such when everyone gets home from work and gets online, there’s not bandwidth for ME, then why the hell are you charging me for it every month. If I don’t pay, I don’t get service. If I DO pay, I STILL don’t get service! Why am I paying for something I’m not getting??
Furthermore, I PAY FOR NETFLIX, but New Wave Communications stops me from being able to watch that as well. So now I’m paying for TWO services I can’t use! (and New Wave wants me to turn my television service back on and buy their telephone service too! HAHAHAHAHA! When hell freezes over assholes! You don’t give me what I pay for now. What makes you think I’m so dumb I’d want more of your crap???
JUST FIX THE DAMN INTERNET ALREADY!! I’M SICK OF THE EXCUSES! And don’t bother to call the “President” like it says if you’re not satisfied with the service you’re local company is giving you or the way they handle your complaint. They don’t call back either! It’s just a big game for the monopolizing bstags.
So now after contacting the BBB and filing a complaint, I am told they will give me a “credit”. $5 is supposed to appease me now after this in and out internet for days, weeks and months? And it’s still ongoing.
I’ve been told by TWO “technicians” now, that if I didn’t like the service I was getting, to “get some other service” or “turn off my service”. This is a one-horse town. There is NO other service to get and they know that! First of all, it isn’t the “service” I don’t like. It’s the LACK OF SERVICE, I’m griping about. If there was any service, I wouldn’t have anything to gripe about!
Today, one of them called and told me “they know of the issue and they are “waiting to get it fixed….MARCH 15!!!! This is FEB 12! This is not just aggravating, it’s uncalled for! CSpire is putting in fiber in my surrounding areas. Anyone have experience with that? Because if they so much as lay one fiber in my yard, I’m going to tell NewWave to stick it where the sun doesn’t shine. Maybe THEN, they’ll get the point when everyone drops them like a hot potato!
GRRRRRRR and they wonder why I’m angry.
I dropped Newwave Internet several years ago because of slowness and outages. Since then, our DSL has never let us down.
Last month, I dropped the TV cable because satellite is now cheaper. I put an antenna up for my local channels and it works great, so I may not even get the Dish. I mentioned this to a fellow employee last week, and he is dropping Newwave also. It’s not just bad customer service, it’s also greedy high prices.
Newwave is absolutely horrible. Once again I’m dealing with an outage in southern Illinois… yet they have raised our bill 3 times I believe without any notification. Speeds are horrible, service is even worse and highly over priced. Cannot wait for another company to come in and run Newwave out. I have a friend in a small town in KY that is getting 60 Mbps for $50 a month. I pay $50 a month for what is supposed to be 15. How do you justify these prices for such 7 reliable service?
I’ve tried to get https working several times but i never thought this would be a file permission issue.
Thanks a lot for this eye opener!
Yuuuupp… Southern Illinois here also experiencing outage times. Usually Sunday on my day off when I actually get to sit down and try to relax after my work week. This has been three weeks in a row my d/l speeds are less than lmb/ps and upload is 1.5mb. I’ve tested on 4 devices, all the same. No point in calling, I was on hold for 30 min listening to them advertise their reliable awesome internet… I wouldn’t piss on newwave if they were on fire.
New Wave has absolutely improved… However that only means going from terrible to one step below Comcast (atleast Comcast had usable service) New Wave promised VOD back over 3 years ago… Found out today…. “something better” is coming out… So never mind Indiana just wait longer FCC complaints are the only way to fine this “investor fed” company out of business… Since, after all the founders sold out big surprise
Southern Illinois’ Newwave branch is a complete joke. I have “15mbps” but its 1.7. After being on hold for over 30 minutes, I was treated to the “peak hours” excuse that is their #1 cop-out for connection issues. The only other options around here are too slow to even bother with, so here I am stuck with the same terrible service.
My 90yo mother has New Wave…unfortunately. Her phone service has been out for 4 of the last 7 days. Cable about the same. Nice. Forget calling. They’re “upgrading” their system, but can’t explain what that means. When I was in IT, if I had caused widespread outages over multiple states for weeks at a time, I don’t think my customers would have called it an “upgrade”.
WOW, made my day! I can’t remember a rant so eloquently stated: expressing my continuous frustration with MS developers constantly mucking with what works and skipping over what doesn’t. Not to mention the Fantastic Workaround!
Since my last post in February, NewWave has proudly boasted that they have upgraded our system so we won’t run out of bandwidth, the largest excuse for the lowest internet service around.
Unfortunately, the last outage I had a couple weeks ago, I was told by the technician that even thought they upgraded, my troubles are because they are already out of the extended bandwidth. Riiiiight. Something tells me, if you don’t have the money to make the necessary changes to control the costs of your service enough to provide PLENTY of bandwidth, then you need to step down and let someone who can afford to run it, do so.
Secondly, now they have resorted to hire people to act as their “bill collectors”. These are flunkies who call and threaten you because your bill is 4 days late. Yes, 4 days. On top of that, they have added a $9.00 late fee to a %30.00 bill!! 1/3 rd of the bill for a 4 day late payment? These people who claim they are the home of the “fastest internet service”, better start running faster, because they aren’t gone yet and they need to be.
NewWave communications is without a doubt, hands down, the worst ISP inn the market. We had a local company here before (Texas Gulf Coast Cable), and they were outstanding (was really pretty bad) in comparison before NewWave. I have called and called and called, and NewWave doesn’t care. All they can say is, we will send out a technician next week. The technician comes out and told me the first dozen times, it was my problem. Then the local tech finally told me that the problem was in the office, that they needed to upgrade the equipment, and the management will not do anything about it. I am considering a class action suit for false advertisement as I am paying for 10Mb service and getting 1.5 on a good time of a good day. It is ashamed that this provider continues to take our money and has no regard for the service they are providing.
I can echo each and every comment here, as they are the exact same problems I have here on the Texas Coast. Evidently their management is incompetent and doesn’t care. How does a class action law suit for false advertisement sound!!! That is my next move!!!
I have had a very bad experience with NewWave. I am a very patient person but this is ridiculous! I cannot watch Netflix or Amazon streaming movies on my tv! It is so frustrating continually getting the messages that the bandwidth is not right! Or, the constant buffering. I had the same service man from the Blanchard Louisiana office come out two times…and sorry but he had no idea what was going on with the issues we have. We are so unhappy with this internet service. Help!!!
My comment is re: the TV cable through NewWave, I am in Beaumont TX, they have been “upgrading” their system for months, last week the “upgrades” were done. All the channels have changed, which really is no problem, BUT they got rid of the guide. Now how do you know which station is which and what is on? I called and my husband talked to the rep. and she said “if you can’t find a program, just call me and I will tell you what station it is on” WHAT ???
Last weekend there was NO sound on all the local channels. Now TNT has a flashing picture and a clicking sound.
We are getting our cable service in the RV park as part of our rent. We were also told we could get the guide IF we PAID for a box… I see satellite TV on the horizon !!!
If you’re moving to an area where NewWave is the only cable ISP (because they monopolized the region) and you’re a serious internet user, you should go with satellite internet if you can. The internet was down for a week due to repairs which I would have assumed were related to fixing their excessive speed and outage issues which have always existed, you know, important things related to customer satisfaction, but instead the maintenance only disabled all the unregistered routers in the area (which was the only perk that came close to compensating for the poor service) to increase profits. Basically, for every router they disabled by taking the internet down for a whole week, they’ll get an extra $50 (the cost to add a router to an existing account) in their pockets per month for services most or all in this particular area don’t even get to begin with. I’ve been with NewWave for years, but nothing they’ve done before has made it so clear that NewWave cares more about profits than customer satisfaction. On a side note, does anyone else notice that all the comments from their page get deleted?
I’m sitting here on the edge of Beaumont, TX, jumping up and down, albeit figuratively, waving to all of you. Let’s see….where do I start? New Wave bought out my old company almost 22 months ago. Supposedly CMA, the original company, had merely “bandaided” the equipment for years and they were upgrading everything and it would be SOOOOO much better.
With CMA, I had the rare outage due to either a storm or someone hitting a pole, or some other legitimate excuse. Service outages were rare, attributable to a reasonable cause, and quickly remedied.
Since the “improvements” things have consistently deteriorated on every level. while I am given too many excuses to count, none of which were New Wave’s fault. Service problems were either due to my faulty equipment (that wasn’t, and is in fact still working perfectly) to the unwillingness/inability of outside contractors to meet their deadlines…it was an endless litany of excuse after excuse.
Now, almost two years down the road, the upgrades are done. NOW the excuse is that the audio settings on my TV are incorrect so most of my channels have no sound. Well, or if I want sound I can rent a set top box for another $9 a month bringing my basic, expanded basis, and crappy internet which is now $98.02 a month, to $107.02, or if I disconnect the coax and then reconnect it, that will fix it…
And just now, as I was typing this, every single channel went off.
Did I mention the clown who, according to caller ID, called me from a private residence who tried his best to bully me into changing my home phone to New Wave?
Last, but not least, is todays “communications”:

That’s interesting, because I paid my bill IN FULL BY PHONE this week and was quoted $98.02.
Do NOT expect me to pay for yet another of New Wave’s problems, particularly in light of the fact that I’m still not getting half of what I’m paying for and haven’t since New Wave took over.

All that number does is dump me right into your automated system with no option to actually get to a live, breathing person.
As for your caring whether I’m happy with my service, I have not been happy since your company bought out CMA.
My verified download speed is 10.61Mbps and upload is 1.16Mbps, and the only reason the download speed is that high is because I’m not actually trying to download anything. The usual is rarely more than 3.5 for either, and that is the beginning of a long and varied list of problems, beginning with but certainly not limited to the fact that in spite of assurances from the last four people with whom I spoke, the phone number on my account is still not updated.
Why don’t YOU call ME on the only number that SHOULD be on the account, which is 409-351-5668.

Good to see this car again. I am the owner from Ohio. I bought this car in 1993 from a dealer with 4k miles. I took great care of this machine. I sold it in 1996 with 14k miles to a teenager who’s dad said he had to give it up within 6 months. Why I never found out. Great to see its still out there. Todd Smith.
Thanks for your post..new wave is trying to takeover my area in IL…I have consolidated and they are awesome…awesome customer service and service guys who know there stuff…would never switch….so new wave can stop sending me junk mail
I’m so tired of them and their bullshit. Had Newwave for years now, previously CMA communications in Jasper, TX but they got bought out, not that anything changed.
Constantly disconnected and reconnected from the internet, mbps constantly fluctuating from 0.01 to 10.00 and sometimes going up into the 40.00 mbs (for the first time today, usually lingers around 20-25) and no matter how many times I call I get the same response:
“We’re sorry for the inconvenience.”
(the hell you are)
“Reset the modem.”
No. I’ve already done that a thousand times or more in the past few years alone (not an exaggeration though I wish it was) and it didn’t do anything before, so why would it do anything now?
“We can send a technician.”
To do what? To come over, tweak with some wires, say that my modem isn’t well maintained or has been broken (even when it was installed the exact same day, I shit you not) threaten to charge me for having to come over and replace hardware? etc.
No. No reset of the modem. No technician. Didn’t work the thousands of times before, not gonna work now.
Fix your shit. I’m stuck with you, so fix your fucking shit Newwave.
I hate you. If you were a person I’d have killed you by now, but you’re a company- I wouldn’t be able to kill all of you if I tried, and I would not be satisfied with anything less than the complete eradication of everyone involved with you- so why bother.
hello . Me and my husband have been dealing with the same things for over a year . First we got 30mbs for 45.99 a month for 1 year first month free. Our first bill was a hundred dollars , lol first month free . well OK . then our computer would only work at night never during peek hours . after about 10 tech visits they finally figure out we needed a new modem . so I call newave tell them its finally working right , so the lady tells me that they will credit us a month for all the hassle I didn’t even ask she offered . So each month goes by no credit , so each month we wait for our credit we build up late fees , now 9 months later 200 dollars in late fees never gave me 30 MBS a second , they told me I only purchased the 15 MBS package when I know what I got . they finally credit us 25 dollars , what a joke , we paid over m200 dollars in late fees . so we contacted the attorney general . still nothing , next step is we need to all get together and get an attorney . they will steal from you lie to you . the communication between the employees at this company is non existent . Each employee you talk to has no idea what you and the customer service representative you last spoke to even talked about . The last time I called they wouldn’t even put a supervisor on the phone . So what our we supposed to do as customers, when the company could care less that you are a customer . when they would rather drop your service then fix it or give you a refund . when they false advertise . all we can do is take it to court . So I need you all to contact me . my email is firstname.lastname@example.org . I have been talking to a few attorneys who are interested in the case .
So anyone who complains to the public gets fixed? So how about that shit internet, pissed poor costomer servivce, tech support who cant fix a flat tire with someone doing it for them, how about the repair guys who are schedualed and never show, or how about the the costomer support just now hanging up on me. The list goes on and on. Also ever month im told that the higher than 10mps package will be ready, that was 3 months ago, whats the deal, why am i paying for crap that wont work? I get off work and i just wanna play games and relaxe but the internet is down again. Theres places in Afghanistan with than me.
I am in Poplar Bluff, MO and NewWave took over our local municipal ISP. No horror stories here, our service is excellent even at peak hours, we rarely if ever have downtime outside of late night scheduled maintenance, and they have done nothing but update and improve our service and cable TV since. They even doubled our speeds for free, and we get 95-100% of that speed 24/7, 50 down 5 up with low pings. You probably think we just use the internet for email or facebook right? Wrong. I wouldn’t be surprised if our household was the one of the heaviest users in this area. The 3 of us eat over 1tb/month in bandwidth easily with everything from gaming to Netflix and other streaming stuff. Good thing there’s NO BANDWIDTH LIMIT. Seriously, short of google fiber I honestly could not ask for better internet service than what I get from NewWave in Poplar Bluff. It’s just about the only thing in Poplar Bluff that doesn’t suck. It’s still not worth living here, but it does help ease the pain.
I would imagine many, but not all, of the complaints here come from people who do not properly configure their router or other devices. If I had not taught myself how to diagnose and repair basic internet problems over the years there would be many occasions of downtime or other problems that I would erroneously attribute to my ISP. Learn more about your router, your computer’s wireless hardware, and basic diagnostic tools. It won’t help you every time, but it will come in handy.
Rights their wrong my foot.
🙁 their service is abysmal, I can’t do shit half the time, can’t use FB, Youtube, or even log into my favorite forums or chat in IRC channels without constantly connecting and disconnecting, slowing down and speeding up, and I have no other feasible options in my area.
They take my money and don’t deliver what they promise…they’re thieves.
I was put on academic probation when I was in college, because all of our homework is online, and Newwave was fucking up major, like always.
Internet is no longer something people can do without- just like people can’t do without fax machines or telephones.
No internet = no job, no education, no life.
If you have a choice, don’t pick Newwave.
I have the opposite problem!
I once had Facebook on my phone (removed since) as well as some other apps which I’ve now removed. I have a million birthdays cluttering my personal calendar on my phone (Android OS, Samsung) which I didn’t add! I don’t want them but they are not removable! Pain in the arse!
I also had a far worse issue with the system whereby I took some photos, with my phone, of personal documents and some app decided to share them on google’s community! F’ing thing!
This tech is marvellous, if you expect it to rebel constantly and annoy the hell out of you.
Nick, I was not addressing your complaint in particular, but the other complaints on this board that haven’t been researched.
“New Wave Communications: The Worst ISP in America …” is the 3rd result if someone googles “new wave communications sucks” and naturally the only responses you’re going to normally get are ones from buttfrustrated people with 26 toolbars on their internet explorer who are still waiting to hear back from that Nigerian prince and don’t understand why their internet isn’t working. Those are the complaints I was referring to. Of course, anyone who drops in with a positive review is immediately met with childish insults and ALL CAPS WORDS.
I only took the time to type my post because first and foremost I am thankful that in such a shitsplot of a town I have A+ internet service for which New Wave deserves one positive review in a sea of complaints, and secondly because you and I both know that what I said is true.
Most people on the internet haven’t the slightest clue what they are doing when it comes to the links in the chain of their internet connection that they have control over. They’re trying to get HD streaming on 4 wireless devices simultaneously with the cheapest Netgear router available at Walmart, and blaming their ISP because they can’t make out all of the hairs in the Duck Dynasty guy’s beard. They can’t understand why youtube is buffering as they’re torrenting Ron Jeremy’s entire filmography. A racist 9 yr old is freaking out about his lag in Call of Duty not realizing that dad is in the basement beating off to interracial gay porn streams… and they all blame the ISP. You can’t tell me you don’t know that a good percentage of your commenters fall into this category. Many of them would benefit from a better understanding of their own hardware, but that’s not as cathartic as the pitchforks and torches is it?
Well I have been fighting with newwave for over 6 months now about my modem always resetting itself they came out yesterday and hooked up a new one and guess what…..today it’s not working right. I haven’t touched it nor do I want to its not my thing I don’t pay them for me to have to fix it. But I shouldn’t shell out that kind of money every month for shit Internet and cable Chandos that lose signal all the time.
Nice to see l’m not the only one who has these problems. My tv connection goes down at least 3 to 4 times a month. Every time a new company comes in the ser ice gets worse. And forget the presidents promise line, nothing but a big unfunny joke.
Last Acer product I ever buy. The Z410 cell phone never worked and would shut out periodically but the kicker was when the screen shattered (very cheap product) and I thought of replacing it. The phone was 169 at costco, and to replace the screen acer is charging 215 dollars. What math from a tech co. The part itself is not available for less than $125. This one is for the landfill but never ever again an acer product.
The. Worst. Company. Ever! Since Newwave took over my tv goes out constantly and my internet sucks! I have been in this house for 15 years and this is unequivocally the WORST service I have ever had with any company.
I have been on the phone with 2 CSR and one Supervisor for the last half an hour and I just don’t have the energy to go on a long rant. Let’s just say my Newwave file folder is full of notes from the numerous calls I have made because my cable box has gone out no less than 4 times, my tv and internet are out a ridiculous amount of times monthly and my internet speed is a JOKE! I have bumped my internet speed from 10 to 50 and it’s still a little faster than dial up. Simply ridiculous! Our hands are tied because they have a monopoly and I can’t figure out how it is legal.
I tried posting a reply on their reviews on other websites & it will not allow me or state that conversation closed. I HATE this cable service very much. My kids dad used to work for this company & he was a pretty smart cable installer (still is) if it weren’t for him I’d be without cable all of the time. Its ridiculous the things he has to fix for me because they WILL NOT! They state they’ll send someone out, but never do or the guy they send out knows nothing & fixes NOTHING. I pay $290.00 a month for the WORLDS most crappiest cable/internet & I am sick of it. My cable keeps going up & we are not renting movies here either. I am still a paying customer here NEW WAVE & just because he was an employee (who they wrongly termenated) does not mean they can jack up my service prices that high. They fired him with not much of an excuse & that pathetic manager Mike Burns (which of whom is a liar & a fake, only fixed the problem of a smart, intelligent customer because he went big & complaint on the internet, otherwise they would have never fixed the issue because they’re all idiots at this cable company) does not mean jack up the cable cost. F.Y.I people this company is planning on selling out to another company within the next year or two. They tell their employees once they do they’ll all get (depending on how long you have worked for their wonderful company, but then fire any employee over a certain time frame so they cannot reap any bennifits verbally offered) 10-30% of what the company sells bonus lol… Righhht. This company knows their fire laws in the state of good ole Indiana (a place where hard working residents have no rights & the hire/fire law is pathetic). I’m not rambling because I am mad at the whole fire my kids father (bc it was the best thing they did, due to he makes more money now then that worthless General Manager Mike Burns) I’m rambling because I’m am so fed up with paying high prices for literally shit. You would think for $290 a month I’d have all the HD channels, all the movie channels, & all the basic & family channels. NOPE!!!!! I DO NOT have cinemas, or all the HD channels, or ALL the basic. This place is a rip off. When I was in Comcast/xfinity area I paid less, had ondemand (which this sad company does not), more channels, faster internet & better quality professional workers & on call staff. This place needs help. Not a GM like this who does not fix problems until someone has spread them for the entire world to see. I’m moving soon in an xfinity area & I am so thankfu .
& to the reply above about not configuring routers correctly is a load of crap. Starters at other cable companies you do not have to continue to mess with the router or generic BS like that. Like I mentioned my kids father was an installer for this generic company & he’s constantly fixing my equipment & BTW my internet goes out everyday around noon & it appears a little funny each day it will do this around the same time. I have cable & internet loss guaranteed a couple days a week & I live in town here in BrownCounty, but there is always a excuse & I feel I should be refunded each & every time I am without service. No on demand is pathetic enough lol.
We never had any problems with cma but to the day that new wave took over it went to crap but the last three months has been the worst we had 27 hours of Internet don’t even try talking to customer service that’s a joke or try to get a repair man I ask about a break on my bill and was told no it’s like going to a store and purchasing all your items and not getting them where we live we have no other option but it’s funny when cma was our provider never had any problems except for a storm or high wind they even went up on our bill we pay for Service and get nothing trust me new wave sucks in every category of their Company : Enterprise,MS
UPS is the absolute worst. I now ALWAYS contact a seller whether it’s eBay, Amazon or anything and ask them before ordering if they can NOT use UPS. If they use UPS or have no way of choosing a courier, I do NOT order from them. USPS will deliver to my apartment’s management office if I’m not home. My apartment complex mgmt office is open on weekends too. Convenient. FedEx can hold my package at their store nearby my place for free if I’m unable to pick it up. Their store is also open until 11pm. Awesome! But…. Brown…. where do I begin?! You get charged $5 to have a package held at their store ($6 if you call and request an agent to do it), and that option is only available after 2 business days after a failed attempt. If after 2 failed attempts, it gets sent to their distribution center (25 miles away for me), and it’s too late at this point to request it being sent to a UPS store. It sits at the distribution center for 5-7 days before being shipped back to the vendor. The problem is, the distribution center closes at 6pm and impossible for me to get their on time during the weekday. On weekends, they’re closed. Wow! What a way to operate… deliver only during hours when 90% of people are at work, close their stores before most people get home from work, and not be have their main distribution center open after 6pm or on weekends. Not to mention, call times with them are always 2-3 times longer than when calling USPS or FedEx. Brown indeed belongs in the sh!tter.
Completely agree, an HP Proliant wih 24Gb and a USB backup drive. SBS 2011, aka 2008R2, so far, 650Gb is 16% complete after 36 hours. Truly truly a shit product
I guess I can join the other 80-some people who have problems with New Wave. I am also one who lives in an area with no choice of cable providers. I have also had problems with TV service and, now, am having problems with internet services which I recently signed up for. I do have to say that they do come out when they say they will and usually do fix the problem, though it often is just a temporary fix because I soon have problems again.
Another complaint I have against New Wave is that they do charge extremely high prices for their crappy services. I cannot add much to what everyone else has said about this crappy cable company because I have had pretty much all of the same problems.
I would be very happy if, like Amy said, New Wave is planning to sell out to another company. However, this does not guarantee the new company will be any better. New Wave, in my area, took over from Charter (another crappy cable company), but the service did not get any better, so. . .
I have had issues for about 3 years now with new wave. They initially dropped a temporary line down the side of my road going to the next houses a few hundred feet down. They left this lay in the road or in my yard for about two years with multiple calls to have it buried. Mowing the lawn was a chore. Each time you had to have someone hold there wire up so you could mow under it. Then they came and laid it in the road after complaints of it being in the yard for over a year. For the next year each time it got hooked on someone’s car which was generally the mail mans while trying to deliver mail it’d drag the wire and rip stuff out of the box at the road and my internet would be down. This caused so many outages it was out more then it was on. I’d call the hotline. I’d go into the main office and each time they’d blame it on the last technician saying the job was complete and that the wire had been buried. Fast forward another year… they put the wire into the ground however there contracted help put the wrong size conduit under the driveway believing they were just using the temporary orange wire that they had laying along the road. The larger diameter black main wire they bury down the road for miles wouldn’t fit in the conduit. The guy with the bucket truck stated he had to get them back out to put in a new conduit. Well three weeks and a few complaints later after losing internet service many times and they came out and reached across the drive. The wire was finally buried. There unused conduit still sticks up on either side of the drive. I was told by a lady named Belinda this job would finally be completed by the first of the year. The conduit, the flags, a roll of temporary wire, plus a wire sticking out of the ground they half dug up and bricks they dug up still remained. The internet still goes out about every two to three days with glitching going on continuously with Netflix and any other streaming service even when directly wired to the modem. The modem has also been changed as they tried to blame there poor service on it at multiple times. The issues aren’t caused by the modem or my wiring at my house. When my internet is out the internet for the next two houses which are the end of the line in my neighborhood are also out. This Belinda who is a district manager here in this area of Indiana near terre haute claimed I was lying. She ended up having notes placed on my account that only she was permitted to work on or make any service calls or any adjustments to my account. Since then you call the hotline and they say you have to talk to Belinda she is a manager in your area. Belinda is seldom available. Belinda has yet to fix the issues. I ended up re breaking my toe last spring when trying to pull there wire out of the road. They claimed that was my fault. That happened on the day that the mailman had it caught on his bumper and actually ended up snapping what appeared to be aluminum on the outside of the main burial drop causing the neighborhood to once again lose service. I’ve called the presidents hotline. It’s a recording. I never got an answer from that. What a waste of time that was. Once again just three days after the last time and hours spent buffering and internet is down again out here. I’ve only received good help and good repairs when I could put public posts on there Facebook account. Seems they’ve disabled that option. If anyone happens to have a direct line in to the president or Vice President feel free to share it. Maybe we could all potentially get some repairs done properly for once because this Belinda sure isn’t doing her job.
Why is so complicated to make bootable an usb key with ipCop ???? Others distro are so simple !!
Not run on my computer.
” ‘dd’ is not recognized as an internal command…”
The worst service ever! I call multiple times EVERY MONTH! I’ve had no success… I’ve had at least 2 supervisors hang up on me because I called them out on the multiple excuses and reasons they gave me in a single phone call which none of the information they had was correct…my question is why have tech support when they never can help you???? Plus they mostly have poor attitudes
UPS lost my box on December 19, 2017, and I have been going through hell with them. I filed a claim and fax over all the information that was required twice. I have been calling every other day, asking when will I get reimbursed, it’s taking forever. I spoke with a supervisor, and I was told last week it takes seven to ten business days. If the check doesn’t arrive this week, by February 2nd, I have to call them again! UPS is causing me so much stress! I’m fed up!
Leave it to New Wave to get even worse after 7 years…
I received a notice today that my internet is now “faster”. I was “upgraded” from 50Mbps to 100Mbps. After checking the website, this letter neglected to mention that the plan is now capped at 300GB (from the previous 1TB) and the 5Mbps upload is now 3Mbps. (Somebody please correct me if I’m wrong, but last I checked, 3 is less than 5, which I believe would be more accurately described as “slower”) I carried the more expensive package previously solely for the faster upload speeds.
I’m not sure how this misleading marketing garbage passes as legitimate customer communication. Guess it just goes to show that net neutrality really does matter, because New Wave certainly does not have the customer’s best intentions in mind whatsoever. I can’t see what the future holds!
Also, I should mentioned the 3Mbps upload “upgrade” wasted no time taking effect. However, my 30Mbps down seems to be a tad short of the claimed 100Mbps…
The data cap is simply the latest in a long string of poor decisions by this company in all of the markets that it services. Unfortunately, however, they do not seem to care about their reputation. They routinely ignore customer complaints, and in all of the markets that I personally deal in (as a travelling PC technician) they are generally regarded by most people as having low quality customer service, poor support, and frequent outages. I’ve had customers choose ADSL connections over the (supposedly faster) New Wave connections just to avoid the customer service nightmares and outages.
The fact that they’ve decided to cap data is just the nail in the coffin of whatever reputation they have left. If you live in an area where you have no choice, you are simply stuck though, and there’s no escaping it.
Actually finding a satisfied NW customer is fairly difficult. In 2016 and 2017 our corporate office (with a New Wave connection) was down over 8 times, one time for FOUR DAYS with a bunch of apologies. Repeated calls to tech support. The only thing I can say, is that their business tech support will show up on time, whether they actually fix the problem is another story.
The problem still exists – in 2018! I bought a HP spectre x360 system recently, and after 2 days of extensive cursing and pulling my hair, returned it. The touchpad is impossible to use. All the other specs and functionality is not of much use if every mouse click is an ordeal. A simple drag and drop of files would take multiple attempts as the cursor would move erratically. Found this thread from years ago and am amazed the problem still exists, making a $16000 system unusable. I guess everyone using it must be using an external mouse.
The dddd change to ddd also works in Windows 10 Pro. Thanks Eric! In Region/Formats use Additional Settings to edit dddd to ddd manually. The old and new settings are saved in the Long Date drop-down. The imposition of “friendly” timestamps all over the internet is a curious feature of machines which work to the nearest 10th of a microsecond or better: 2018-08-18T01:20:15.157713100Z – a typical Event Viewer timestamp, the last two zeroes possibly dummies, the “Z” Zulu time or GMT/UTC. Crazy world. That is, “about an hour ago” it was, until I found this thread (at 23/08/2018 23:41:06GMT, as it happens).
Just received package last night from UPS because they said address had to be corrected, bullshit right address on package. Came in tore to hell this 120 lb jack had been thrown multi times it was beat up bad broke through the board it was strapped to. Filing claim now with Summit. Summit Racing are the only good thing about this UPS bullshit. They will take care of it.
Wish Summit Racing would start their own shipping company.
Hi I’m Running windows 10 Pro and have tried to create a symbolic link but once I create it the game doesn’t open up at all, not sure how to fix this, as soon as I revert everything back the game opens up fine. doesn’t give me any error message or anything, just does the loading sign and then nothing happens and the loading sign disappears.
hope you are able to help with this dilemma
Hi. I know this post is over 10 years old, but I’d really like to install two Sims4 on my laptop and wanted only one of them to link to another EA folder with my main ea folder in C:/My Docs, left intact.
I create cc and download A LOT for my Sims game, every time I have to test a new or downloaded file, I have to move most of my 35.6GB of cc out of the mods folder, which causes the game to start up slowly the next time after putting everything back. This would help. 🙂
Decent, and pretty reliable, I pay for 100 down / 3 up and rarely have any issues… also this speed test was ran with a 1080P netflix stream playing on the TV
I like the site. Great job on the logo! It’s funny, I almost posted the same gif on my site. Great minds think alike you know.
